Well my Z is trying to commit suicide literally! i fix the alternator after she almost gets hit when it went bad in the middle of the road, then the same day i fix it the thermostat goes bad and i almost blow the engine. (thank god i didn't) Now the most reasonable thing to do if your engine did decided to go bye bye would be to swap another of the same engine in or at least a turbo version right?
Well, if my engine does take A dump I don't wanna do that, I wanna go with a inline 6 setup and a cheap one. RB20DET VS L28ET. old skool VS New skool
The RB can be had for almost the same price as the CA18DET (1,000 - 1,400). The L series half the price of that (300 - 500).
Opinions? ppl? Aftermarket? how much abuse can they take? anything to worry about?
EDIT: none of that OLD ENGINES ARE PEICES OF SHIT thing! Or I'll have to come over there and bitch slap you Lol

L28et Vs Rb20det
id go with the L28et..theres a guy here in nc with a turbo 280zx with stock block stock turbo and stock fuel doing 11's in the 1/4 mile they can handle some nice power..i honestly think an rb20 is a waste of money.
RBs are very finicky engines, be prepared to do some major troubleshooting with it. I would personally got rb20 not for POWER reasons, but for economy in a daily driver.

L28 for sure. would be cool to pop the hood on a newer Z car and see the older engine in there
in for l28.

Sorry but thats not even close to being true.
I've been running an L28et in my Z for about 6 years now. Its currently the fastest 5 speed L28et Z in the states. Best pass was almost 2 years ago at 11.24@124mph. Now the car is making over 500whp and I just havent been able to put together a clean pass.
ANYWAYS, the L28 is a sturdy motor, you can beat on it and its pretty forgiving. That being said it is old tech. The head doesnt flow nearly as well as newer DOHC motors and it takes alot to overcome that. If you want bang for the buck and under 400hp then the L28et is for you. The RB20 would be a great compromise of power and efficiency and great sound. Although I have a standalone on my Z and I get 27-28mpg on the highway.
Its certainly alot simpler to swap in an L28.

you maybe the fastest one you know of, doesnt mean there isnt one faster.
not everyone posts thier life on the internet.
and the l28 makes something the rb20 doesnt, torque.
Both are good engines... just look at what you need for your power requirements. I still dont get why there is such a movement against the RB20. It is a very good engine and very good on petrol usage. You may lack torque on the low end, but with a Neo you can tune that thing like crazy. Have it spool by 3k or 2.5 on a cold day and it pulls in a very remarkable upward line until about 6k. May not seem like much of a power band but I can testify to the insane amount of power that thing puts out. Financially I would go with L28 from what you said, but personally, I would go with a RB only cause it's newer and there are an insane amount of aftermarket parts. But yes, Dan is right. They are extremely picky... but that's part of the reason that they are so capable to make enormous power.

Fair enough.
well i didn't want to comment so early just to see what people say about both engines, thanks guys.
It's hard choosing a engine because both can make big power both are around the same power from factory or close. I like the L28ET because it's a simpler engine and easier to diagnose if something goes wrong, RB's as some have said are picky, but they can make good power too. it may just be a 2.0 but the FJ is a 2.0 and has made 800hp before, maybe not as reliable as a 2.8 liter but it still made the power.
I'm not planning on going whoa 900hp! kinda thing more like factory with just a tab bit of modification nothing to big but nothing too small, maybe cams and a intake and thats probably about it. and very small side mods like ignition etc.

turbos12http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hqxgGuGhrAAhaha,this guy. I've seen this car a few times, we both attend the same Shootout event every year. This guy uses a Ford C4 Auto tranny, Its not a stock turbo, its not a stock head, its not a stock cam. It may be some nissan factory electronics but they arent in stock configuration. Trying to remember if he sprays as well. . .

At any rate, every time I've been to this event that car has never pulled off a low 11/10sec pass. At any rate a buddy of mine still holds the record at 10.6@129 with a twin turbo L28 automatic powered 240z which was set about 4 years ago.
I mean props to the guy but dont think he hasnt sunk alot of time and money in that car. Just want to make it clear that the L28 is cheap to get 300whp out of but really starts adding up if you want over 400whp.
