Anyone have a spare R180 laying around that they could measure the flange?
I may have another viable upgrade for R180 owners, the funny thing is, is that it's technically a downgrade.
It should actually be stronger, but not nearly R200 strong.
I just need either the diagonal measurement from bolt hole center-to-center of the input flange (where the drive shaft connects).
If no one has one, I'll just have to unbolt my drive shaft and measure it my self.

R180 Companion Flange
Yes, I do. Its a bit buried in the garage, I'll let you know today/tomorrow.
i like my r180
Cool, thanks man!
Yea, I like my R180 too, but I don't like exploded spider gears because I decided to drop the clutch at 4k RPM and 8PSI boost.
...Not that I've broken them, yet.
Edit:
My idea right now: Use a spare, one that I can beat on... If it blows, toss the old R180 back in and go about my business.
Did ya forgot? Take your time, I'm not really in a hurry... I might just drop my drive shaft real quick today, since there are a few other things I wanted to work on.
...That is if I don't get lazy today.
Damn, they aren't the same pattern... I had a feeling they wouldn't be.
I guess I'll just have to make a flange holder and blast the nut off, then swap flanges.
Oh well.

at the risk of stealing this post, i would like some more information about these differentials. i bought an s12 that was halfway through a ca20 to vg30 swap. i have 5 driveshaft sections i have acquired and still do not have a compatible driveshaft. i have 2 front sections. one i have no idea what it is from, the other i pulled from a ca18et car in a junkyard and the yolk and the carrier bearing fit perfect. the back halves all have the same flange. one back section is too long and the two others are the right length to fit on my swapped car but have a flange that does not match the companion flange on the differential. one of these rear driveshaft sections is from the same ca18 car in the junkyard.
what differential would come in a mk1 ca18 manual car?
what differential is supposed to be in my [originally] ca20 auto?
what differential do i have now?
also, it appears that i have templates for both flanges here if you still need measurements.
can the differential companion flanges be swapped?
That depends, what year is the CA20E car from? The CA18ET came with an R200. The CA20E from 1984 came with the H190 and SRA, after '84 they were R180 and IRS.

(this is callorsx's old car if that rings any bells)
can the companion flanges swap over? am i better off getting the whole rear end from the ca18et mk1 with the r200 in the junkyard? the primary objective here is to get the car running; lsd upgrades are not necessary yet.
Ahhh so YOU'RE the one who ended up with that car! Cool
I think the R180 is different, but not sure so maybe someone can verify, but look at it this way, if you pick up an R200, you're solving the problem, and you get the stronger diff in the process.
That way if you swap to something else, you're set
The flanges can be swapped between a R160 and R180, but I'm not sure on a R180 to R200. I think they do, but really not sure.
we have swapped between R32, S12, Z31 and such...but they are all R200...however they appear as though they might be able to have the flange swapped with the R180...there is however one for sure way to find out...
Alex Frost...there is however one for sure way to find out...Okay, you guys have left me with no choice. I guess i will just have to buy the r200 differential and try to swap the companion flanges
i think i will just swap to the r200. it doesnt appear to be too hard to drop the whole rear carriage in a junkyard.

Here is proof that an s12 rear assembly can fit inside a hatchback civic!

flatback power.

another r180 fan here .I have had no problems with my r180 exploding yet. close to 400 rwhp for about 3 years now. and about 6 months with dyno proven 400 whp through the r180. but I am a little afraid of what might happen with slicks on the car. I beat the piss out of the car with street tires. I always assumed the r180 wouldn't last. may be we need to re think what a welded r180 can actually handle.
Welded, it should hold at least as much as the R200.
Ok, the R160 and R180 flanges are fully interchangeable. Still don't know about R180 to R200.
Interesting fact, Subaru WRX R160 has a much larger input flange than our R180's. Why? Who knows.
I still need to order new bearings for my R160, since I couldn't get them off the R180 I got from Sterling, at least not in one piece.
Diff mount stud spacing is the same on the R160 and R180 as well, so no need for a new mount. R200 is a different story though, it's studs are a little wider (by 2mm, I think, I didn't really note the difference).
The r200 flange DOES fit in an r180 !!
i just got it in last night.
here are some pics:
this is the stock r180 with the stock flange
here is the stock r200 flange in my hand next to the still installed r180 flange

Here is both flanges out of the car laying next to each other. The r180 is on the left, the r180 on the right.

here is the r200 flange installed into the r180 differential.
to repeat: the r180 and r200 companion flanges are interchangeable!
Awesome, that means you don't need a new drive shaft when you change from an R180 to an R200... Just swap flanges!
Thank you!
hold on. how can i confirm what differential these flanges came from? callaro is trying to tell me both of my differentials are r200s. i just want to figure this out.
R160 and R180s both have aluminum bearing retainers on the sides of the diff, R200s don't (they just have the oil seals on the sides).
Just to update this as this thread led me to confusion, the companion flange from the R180 and R200 ARE NOT INTERCHANGEABLE! The splined shaft is wider on the R200.
