SO I'm in the process of building up my CA18DET and ordered a Cometic/Wiseco MLS head gasket as well as a full engine gasket kit. Both say they are for the DET. Wrong. Just cause the CA18 blocks are similar outside doesn't mean they are inside. Both the Cometic gasket and the generic head gasket are not the correct ones for the DET block. The DET block has WAAAAY more water jacket galleries. Check the pics....

I've contacted Coetic/Wiseco about this they say it's for the DET as well. I call bullshit. So what the hell is everyone that has built up a DET doing for a head gasket?

i thought the same thing when i replaced the hg on my ka. they block them so the water gets pushed all the way thru the block. if all the passages were open only the first few cooling passages would get decent flow. it also helps to maintain and eliminate hot spots on the block. opening all them up in a daily driver would cause some wierd cooling issues. the passages with the holes on the hg act as a geyser to force the coolant up, down and around. im sure there are more reasons they block them too, i'll let someone else chime in.
