Race S12
Nice!!! Good to see someone with the balls to mod a ca20e. Let us know how the motor performs once you get it back together.
Can you tell a full story please? You said that you made it a sport car in '84... That means that you taken a new S12 at that time and build a race car back then or I am mistakenly get it? Because photo of you behind the wheel is looking quite old.
extra 'p' in model # may mean preproduction, as vin # says 7th car off the production line
You should feel really lucky!!!
Make sure you take good care of that car, it may be the oldest documented production S12!!!
And FYI (for people unfamiliar with VIN coding): the 7 does NOT mean that it is the 7th S12, it means that it was the 7th vehicle to roll out of that particular plant. So it may very well be one of the first S12s!
i bought the car in '02 from my friend don reynolds who was the head motorbuilder for nissans imsa gtu and gtp program. here is the gtp car
here is don driving a gtu car
he got my car from wade hampton, owner of american instruments and nissans sponsor of the electomotive nissan imsa cars. wades son, ryan hampton, is now a pro race driver, including indy lights, alms, and d1 drifting. http://members.cox.net/ryanracer/ryanracer/index.html he won scca national championship(s) in the car i now call mine. heres a pic of it from his website.
and what he drives now (although ive seen an article where hes drifting a 69 camero now)
my understanding is that wade hampton had this car built for ryan from the factory, and was later bought/given to don reynolds, who then sold it to me. it has had many motor rebuilds and don isnt sure of all the details, so now im learning as i dig into it. when i bought it, i changed fluids and took it racing. this is the first time ive ever really taken it apart. ive never had the oilpan off so have not seen the rods, but am very curious, but further disassembly means longer wait until track time, so doubt ill tear down the motor further.
Wow....I wish I had your suspension.
Redneck
Wow....I wish I had your suspension.
hah you and everyone else
Nice notch i like......

Wow, now that's something you really can't see very often!
Its also from plant A. Its one of the VERRRRRRRRY first.

Digging needs to be done! I wanna know how many S12s were made before this one... Kinda cool to say "Yea, this is one of the first S12s ever produced, cuz it was the 7th car off the assembly line in the Nissan plant..."
Ooooo, I'm getting chills!
wow you need to get that thing dyno'ed to see how much that thing is making
It's not a powerhouse, it's a CA20E Bluke will be the first to say he's more concerned about *handling* than power.

this is going to sound dumb, but the 1974 next to ca20e does refer to ccs right?...omg, i need to go double check my plate right now...
nm, it does refer to ccs...i had this weird feeling that his car was made in 74 for a second in some secret ungerground nissan base.
Hey Jason WTH is that supposed to mean LOL. I'm more concerned about handling too. Maybe not to that extent, but I would have sported my 20E auto for a long ass time if the 20e didn't have weird 80s electrical problems. That, and if I didn't pick up that 18det car haha. It's ok, more power = more fun for a street car haha.
arro is correct. handling comes FIRST. but once youve got that sorted out, more power never hurt anyone! this car handles great, sleight understeer on very slow corners, like an autocross, but at racing speed it is really predictable, and ive got the rear adjustable sway bar set to full stiff, so it rotates well. even when the rear steps out, it sits there without snap-spinning. im gonna ask don if he still has his dyno, im curious too!
Are you running the car at HRMC? I met Don once at Hallett, very smart guy. Glad to see someone else racing one of these cars. I ran an 87 v6 in SCCA for appx 6 years. Great fun!
a22770yeah, i love hallett! ive raced there many times, but my s12 hasnt been there in 3yrs or so. but it should make its return later this summer! don used to drive this car back when century racing was still around, it had a passenger seat and was yellow with billy blank? (the martial arts guy) stickers. they had street tires on it and would give potential customers rides where don would have the car sideways in every corner to scare them. what did you do with your old racecar? where are you from? i dont see it on your user info.

yeah you need to update your user information in your profile section with location info. That's expected of everyone on here.

Of course, dude! You're a handling guy, so the engine is secondary to you. You don't even plan to push lots of power through your CA18DET anyways If anything, you and Bluke have more in common. So yeah, your CA20E car can "race", because racing corners isn't the same as top speeds.
I just want to see what a proper "race" built CA20E puts out
Im very curious
bluke1That looks like you have an S12 *turbo* model MAF, it looks exactly like mine, and I expect that considering the history of this car, it is, because most of the modifications done to it were before the S13, and all they had were wha was available from Nissan in '84 or what they could custom make themselves.
im pretty sure its a s13 maf, here it is
as far as the year, lvdave looked it up on his nissan program at work, so i dont doubt what he said.
Bluke I'd really like to see better pictures of your rear camber adjustments, and if you know how many dergrees of adjustment that gives, do tell.
that would make sense about the maf because the ecu has the dial type method of checking the code as opposed to the on off switch that the ca20 uses. although ryan hampton called it a 240 hotwire conversion, so im not really sure. might need to look up the part #. in a day or two i will go wild with the camera and get some of the pics you guys want to see up close!
I correct myself with this:
S13 KA24DE MAF is how it's listed, so I assume that is what they used until the S14, which used this:
This is listed as a KA24E MAF, which may indeed be what you have:
It's more likely like the first one Arro posted - KA24DE. Look at the wire jack (contact) - it is bolted to the body as in the first pic. The last pic (KA24E) have this plug made in one body with the big plastic part.
getting the car ready for a race oct 25-26. pretty close to finishing prep work, but still need to bleed brakes, change pads, mount tires, etc. my buddy don, who i bought the car from, is giving me all the used race tires i could want for free! plenty of life still on them (rich guys throwing away perfect heatcycled tires!) with brands like toyo and hoosier. another friend of mine helped me redo/add some new stickers, numbers and sponsors, etc. heres a few teaser pics. ill have the car cleaned up and some professional pics from the race, with hopes of a spot in the calendar!!!!
) and may add some more (if i can get more free stuff).
More pics on roll cage!
heres a few of the cage that i have, i can take more specific ones if asked

bluke1
Edit: I'll send you a stencil graphic for the new one if you want, PM me. Also if you get someone to take some good on-track pictures, maybe you can submit one for the calendar...? It's gotta be high-resolution originals tho.
OMG SO COOL IT BLOWS MY MIND!!
This, and most of the interior is still there. so badass (I understand is probably a class reg. thing)
Free tires are GOOD!
please, lots of pics of this event!!
can you give details on where exactly this event is at? I might be... somewhat local
I would like a picture of the mounting point of the main arch of the cage. Also, I guess the cage is SCCA certified??
the cage is scca legal except i think they now require a 'nascar' style driver door bar. ill get more pics later today of the mounting points. the race is at hallett motor racing circuit, located a few hundred yards of the turnpike near tulsa. you can find directions and a track map here http://www.hallettracing.net/ . i will be racing on the 25-26 of october. it would be cool if you were...somewhat local
bigjerhere are some pics of the mounting points. i will tell you that in the cages that were built by kirk getches, a master cage builder/engineer, look a lot better. this cage was built in the 80's. scca rules allow a 'footprint' dimension for the main roll hoop and other mounting points, and kirk would maximize it st the strongest structure points of the car. he would also drill through the dash to run his bars, instead of curving around them like my cage. the scca rules allow some ingenuity, they just dont spell out what it is. nevertheless, here is what mine looks like
I would like a picture of the mounting point of the main arch of the cage. Also, I guess the cage is SCCA certified??

you can see the footprint could be larger, and also tie in with the vertical structure (based on scca rules). the key is to maximize the footprint of the cage to tie into the most structurally sound points in the car, not just the floorpan where its convienent. i may see if i can get some pics of better mounting points like ive tried to describe and post them up for you.
oh, and i also installed a new windsheild today, getting closer!!!
I think I get what you mean. Just draw a short diagram on paint. Should look a bit like this?
That's how I plan to design my roll cage, minus the two front arch (basically a 4pts instead of a 6pts). I wan't to keep my car street legal and these two front bar aren't legal for street car.
my pics are not that in depth but here are the links to them they are huge so I dont want to post them in the thread I can try to get more pics later but right now I dont have a good digi cam so cell phone pics would be all i could get. Also remember mine is just a 4 point back half cage

Nice pics. That is exactly the model of roll cage I'm willing to go with. The only thing is about your rear mounting point, I won't be able to reach that point in my notch, unless I go in cutting. I'm probably gonna mount it in the same spot as bluke1 roll cage.
redrockets cage looks nice! appears to be strong and streetlegal. heres a simple drawing to give you a better idea of what i was talking about
see how the 'footplate contacts what would be the floor and the side of the cars structure in a large area and the gussett helps tie in the whole thing. multiple gussetts can be used, depending on if you are trying to make it competition legal or just for personal safety.
can you snap off some pics of the engine I am really interested in how it looks also do oyu have itbs really want to see that
im calling koni and trying to get them to maybe find the plans or something.i dont know im calling and trying hard to get them.
sorry, no itb's, and it doesnt look very impressive, scca improved touring rules dont allow for much modification to the engine... most if what it has done is internal, but you might notice more of what it doesnt have, like all the emmision and idle control stuff. and if you look, it has a maf instead of the factory vane type airflow sensor and the rules require using the factory air intake box, but the pipe is custom.

just got back from my first race weekend after pulling it out of mothballs! had a few issues (clutch slave cylinder blew its seal on my 4th lap, drove 2 hrs to get a replacement, exhaust flange bolts broke/fell out during feature race causing early retirement) but the car performed well, engine ran strong, and i had a lot of fun! lap times got better as my confidence grew and it handled beautifully, much more time left on the table. pics will follow (eventually, need to submit for calendar ) tired, more later....
so i guess ill finally post some pics, most are taken during practice because for some reason, the photographer doesnt want to work late sunday so doesnt take pics of the race. oh well. i would have liked some door to door pics of me passing and being passed. next time ill bring a friend with a good camera.
first are some pics of the new logo on the hood. i had the sticker made but im sure the ones the club makes available will look even better! ask arro, i have no inside knowledge, just wanted to represent!

race weekend, practice and qualifying. careful! many pics

and yes, i DO plan on fixing that dent on the rear quarter soon!!!
as promised, dent repair stage 1
a friend generously loaned me his porta power
pushed out the dent
another angle

next step is to smooth out the wrinkles with body hammers, etc and to try and match the paint, or find another way to hide the damaged paint (graphics, different color, etc)
Damn nice car man I'm jealous of ur track time. And a nice fix too. Both ur rocker panels are dented? How'd that happen?
IggyEGuanathanks. no, just the passenger side was caved in, ironically by a z31. it happened during the first season i had the car, i had driven it before but finally had gotten comfortable in the car and had gotten into a real dicey race with a white 300z. he could out motor me in the straights but i had him on handling so we were stuck together lap after lap. i could pass him in the twisty bits and he would re-pass me in one of the two straights at hallett. then i would pass him again and so the day went. i finally had kept him behind me down the front straight (we were running clockwise, the track turns are numbered counterclockwise) and throught the 180 degree turns 10 & 11 he divebombed me throught the grass and punted me in the rear quarter. i spun, and so did he. unfortunately i continued to spin, making two full rotations while he only spun once. so i ran him down again and passed him. i cant remember fully, but im sure i only finished 6th or 7th in the race, but when we pulled into the paddock we both had huge grins from all the dicing we did. i shook his hand and said the dent was worth the great racing, just dont do it again. i continued to race, never bothering to fix the dent. now i need to make it look like an s12 and racecar should (especially if i ever want to be a contender for the next calendar!)
Damn nice car man I'm jealous of ur track time. And a nice fix too. Both ur rocker panels are dented? How'd that happen?
Heh I was wondering when you'd get around to the dent Even with the dent, the car is awesome tho.... I dunno about that track photographer man, he sounds like totally fuckin useless biomatter.
When you get that dent dealt with, have a buddy snap some good action pics. think *calendar*
Im not a huge fan of coupes in general....but this one and that red sr20'd one that everyone loves are my faves from what Ive seen on this site...Youre lucky youre able to race it...Im jealous!
ps: the black rims w/ chrome lip looks kick ass on it.....keep that style!
The dent looks a lot better now that you pushed it out. This looks like a fun car.
this car is awesome in everyway. Any chance of vids from future races?
and anyhing more on the 240sx hotwire? Just curious..
update. i was at hallett today working for don (the guy i bought the car from) we had 4 spec miatas to maintain, although it dropped to three after one of his drivers put a rod through the block. i watched the cars in my class run and was jealous because my car needs some attention before i can take it back out, but i took the money i made crewing and ordered a five point harness, muffler, two msd coils, and a spark plug wire kit. with this stuff i should be able to make a race in the next month or so. i cant wait, my last race was more about sorting out the car and making sure everything was working (and fixing the stuff that wasnt) then going for fast laps. once i get my new parts installed i should be back to setting personal fast laps, and there is a prepped early model sentra that needs a good fight!
man, i suck at updating my build threads. i raced the car this year, but in july something broke. i was accelerating out of a 2nd gear corner at about 5k rpm and heard a thud!! looked in the rearview to see a miata dodging metal parts bouncing down the track. the motor had died and made no noise when i hit the start button. i pulled off track and the tow truck driver brought me some metal brackets and told me my starter was hanging beneath the car. after being towed back to the paddock i looked under the hood and saw a 1/4" gap between the motor and tranny. the brackets were motor/tranny mounts. one of the bellhousing tabs was broken.
fast forward to now. i havent touched the car since to concentrate on getting my se on the road. but i picked up a ka24de from a friend a few days ago that is in really good shape (new seals, good compression, act stage 2 clutch with 5k miles) that is going to live in my racecar. the ca needs to come out anyway to see what caused the problem and i need a few more ponys to keep up with the miatas on the straights, so this is my answer. i will keep and refresh the ca so i can have an scca legal motor for the future. but will run next season with a little more go! pics will follow as progress is made.
