I have a friend who just started at napa, so for ****s and giggles I wanted to see what kind of price he could get me on arp head studs for the 18det. He got a hold of someone and then told me it was going to be 226 bucks shipped because arp started to make head studs with titanium in them because people where breaking the old arp head studs. I just called up arps 1800 number and they are still selling thru them for 144.88 before shipping. Anyone know if he is just trying to mark them up real high on me? Or is there really some super arp head studs out there made out of titanium. I can see my friend lyeing to me obviously, so i wont be surprised either way. Also, the guy in arps sales dept couldnt give me a total with shipping for some reason and the only way arp has for you to buy there stuff is thru the phone...i was thinking shipping couldnt be more then 10 or 20 bucks from cali to washington, but i was going to pay for the studs with my debit card so i was wanting a total for what i would be spending...

Yeah he's just bein a dick and tryin to rip you off.

The shipping shouldn't be more than 20 bucks.

There are other places to get them. Just be sure you have the ca18det kit and not a re-stickered sr20det kit. The difference is only slight but its very important.
The ca18det kit part number is 202-4702.

If they don't list the part number ask them specifically for the ARP part number just to be sure.

yah, i know that arp used to just rebadge the sr20 kit or something for the 18det, but the head studs are a bit longer so they didnt seal as well.

Perhaps a silly question but.. at what stage do you need these in the CA?

Im guessing the higher the boost the more reason to have them? Are people doing them because they need them or just because they arnt very expensive and provide a new/better head stud?

I'm pretty sure the stock head bolts are TTY(torque to yield) so they stretch and have a limited range as to how much they can be used. So people generally get aftermarket head studs for a rebuild

Umai NaaApr 22, 2008, 11:37 am · #10

Stock bolts are 'stretch-bolts', and should only be used once.

For a stock/light-tune rebuild, new stock bolts, and a decent metal head gasket (such as Cometic), will do. They're like $10ea from Nissan.

ARP is for CA's with 180rwkw+ in mind.

Will, call Fabre in Sydney. They'll sort yo out. Last time I priced a set up, they were around the $190 mark.

Holy, that's pretty expensive. Stock head bolts for the KA are about 8 dollars each from the dealership while ARP head studs for the KA are 80-100 dollars. So people generally get ARP anyway since they're reusable.

anything past 14psi on a t25 you get into a area where the head bolts start stretching. i went thru 3 sets and all stretched out about 1-2mm so ya arps are the way to go when u want higher boost

Bare in mind that we're in two different countries, who's exchange rates differ wink.gif

The prices I quoted are AUD trade prices smile.gif

I have been told that the stock head studs wont hold down the cometic head gasket properly. I am not sure if they used new stock bolts, or re used old stock bolts. I prolly wont be boosting to high...but it is for sake of mind.

Umai NaaApr 28, 2008, 1:11 pm · #15

Cometic says to torque the head down to OEM specs, which I've done, plus I'm also using new Nissan head bolts. I don't thinkt there will be a problem with it.

I just received my head stud kit and the included paper said to torque to 80ft.lb. in three steps with their moly lube or torque to 85ft.lb. with regular 30 wt. motor oil lubcricating the threads.

FSM says go to 76ft.lb. in a two step tightening, then loosen, then another two step tightening.

Seems very different. Got my kit for $117.

Umai NaaMay 3, 2008, 1:14 am · #17

Do it ARP's way wink.gif

What head gasket are you using?

the difference is dur to that fact that the oem bolts are torque to yield where the arp units arnt
sicjMay 3, 2008, 3:44 pm · #19

I'm using a Cometic MLS gasket
