This might sound rediculous but I want to boost a CA18DET to about 27psi. reliably I've seen it done and I have a vague Idea of the mods it took to get there I just wanted to ask you guy incase any of you know some steps and tips and other mods I don't know of to help me reach my goal.

fully built bottom end, and a super good headgasket seal.

lots o monies.

your right that does sound ridiculous. get the book maximum boost by corkey bell. read and learn.

... Fuckin wow. Good luck, hope ya got deeeeeeep pockets.
bartc_jMar 28, 2008, 9:45 pm · #6

if you build it correctly it can easily handle 27psi reliably

TimeslipMar 29, 2008, 9:13 am · #7

Yeah I know, but I don't have deep pockets I work at kragen. But I've got somewhat of a plan to the build. Heres what I've got planned in the material price part, the labor I can do on my own.
I plan on running a 8:1 or less static compression ratio.
forged pistons:$600
H-beam connecting rods:$400
Knife edge and balance the crank: free
port and polish: $100
new Valve seats: $20
Ferrea valves: $300
Eibach dual valve springs: $200
ARP head studs: $100
Ka24E throttle body: free
Powered by Max FMIC kit:$300
Gasket rebuild set:$250
Powered by Max Oil cooler kit: $80
Please let me know of anything I haven't put on here, including the cost and alternatives to the things I have listed thank you.

your missing a vital part.

the turbo.

and manifold.

and i would put cams in the mix.

and big injectors.

then engine management.

the fule pump, lines, regulator

and on and on.

YEA t25 max efficiency range is somwhere in between 12 and 16 psi, i know that on my sr20 my t25 starts dropping boost as soon as it spools to 12...plus on an old turbo like that you prolly wont get any more out of it...id suggest gt2835r for maximum spoolage small exhaust housing for fast spool, big compressor housing for big spool, and prolly a nice tubular exhaust manifold, and a nice intake manifold with velocity stacks...that ca would pull like a bitch...let us know what you decide to do... oh, and i just finished rebuilding my ca and swapping it...its a whole lot more tedious and expensive than just a $250 gasket kit, youll need a new water pump thermostat oil pump with cog, timing belt and tensioners, and other such things...but in the end itll be worth it since you need a fully built motor to run the exact way it should

bartc_jMar 29, 2008, 4:11 pm · #10

i guess the real question is what hp are you aiming for cause 27psi of boost can be a huge hp range depending on turbo you use...

TimeslipMar 29, 2008, 5:24 pm · #11

Well I already have the fuel lines pump and filter covered on the car already with Z32 fuel pump and filter,
I've already pulled the injectors from a DSM i just need to double check the size I believe they are 550cc. and the turbos I've already got a disco potato GT28r and an S15 T28 I believe they are about the same except the disco potato is reman. and uses better components.
the Manifolds I need.
I diidn't reallize I needed to revamp the oil pump, water pump etc. but thats why I asked you guys because I knew I could learn something valuable that keep me from fucking shit up. thanks.

brewster240Mar 29, 2008, 7:18 pm · #12

just curious, where and why did you chose the number 27psi?

and who told you it will work with a disco potatoe or s15 turbo?

TimeslipMar 30, 2008, 9:34 pm · #13

well I choose 27 PSI as a goal because that was the most I have ever seen or heard of a CA18DET safely boosting and so I can shut up all the SR purists who call CA's garbage but all I really want is a respectable CA that womps on SR's all day and even gets some respect from Domestics yet is still daily drivable. and if 27 psi isn't my majic number then so be it.

Where's the logic in this? You just want a nice CA to "womp" on sr's and domestics? You're going to be spending a whole lot to keep up with an SR, and even if it did perform better than some SR's, who one is going to really care? The majority of SR folk are HAPPY AS HELL with a reliable 250-300hp and don't ever really go further, downtime is also short with so much aftermarket and oem available from even dealerships. Let's face it here, parts availability is slightly an issue for the CA, it's going to be a little hard without deep pockets. And for what again?

to have a high horsepower misfit engine in a misfit car?

the ca18det is a double edge sword, in a way. the cost of the engine set is lower then the SR, but it costs more to actual mod the engine and make power. if u want high horsepower on a budget, then you shouldnt be looking at the 18DET. personally i went with the engine because of my lower power goals and since i wasnt using anything custom or higher end. im sticking with stock cams, and stock exhaust manifold to obtain my low 250hp goals. head smoothing, a new turbo, fuel system upgrades, etc are the easiest way to achieve such small numbers on that engine. some even claim over 400hp on stock internals, but i cant verify it. 27psi is the fastest way to turn a ca18det into scrap iron

the first half is right, second half, not so much.

you can get every maintainence part for a ca from the dealer or a parts store, and for sr its only certain internal parts, as the fwd and rwd sr's are much different, not to mention usdm uses a distributor setup and det's used cop.

as far as aftermarket parts go, most things, like turbo's, exhausts, interooler kits, injectors, fpr, etc are the same for ca as sr, and even other cars.

so that leaves pistons and cams, etc. pretty much every piston company will make ca pistons to order, most of them already have the specs they need already, and wont need you stock piston to map off of. there is one company the keeps them on the shelf ready to go.

rods are pretty strong to begin with, and again, most companies will make them to order, and already have the specs.

cams, there are tomei and others available, and plenty of regrinds possible.

so yeah, if you shop around you can get them for the same or cheaper then for an sr.

then you dont have to worry about rocker arms and other things.

but anyway, julie is on the right path. why go crazy right off the bat just to prove something? put the motor in the car, freshen it up, do a nice turbo, fmic, and exhaust and you will be happy, i think.

shit, i had a n/a ca in a s13 coupe for a beater, and even that was fun.
NeedCAforS13Mar 31, 2008, 1:53 am · #17

beat domestics, with domestic power. ls1. ca18's are for wusses and girls.

and i ran eleventy billion psi on my ca18. it was awesome. i would recommend you shoot for something around there.

ok, but seriously. get a good turbo and you won't need to run 27psi to beat domestics. my s13 was faster than my e46 m3 on 16 psi. wheelspin in 1st, 2nd and 3rd. top mounted td06-20g with supporting mods.

shame what happned to that car.

was that still the n/a block when you sold it? did you ever swap out the oem turbo pistons you put in?

its been years, i cunt remember.

n/a block, turbo pistons and rods. n/a pistons cracked on low boost t25.

yeah i remembered that much.

this is mike, ca18datsun510 if you didnt remember.

i knew that wink.gif how have you been?

TimeslipApr 2, 2008, 5:42 am · #23

well here's a new question what is the maximum amount of boost i can run on a CA18DET with a static compression ratio of 8:1?

Umai NaaApr 2, 2008, 7:11 am · #24

Who cares?

Aim for a hp figure, not a boost figure. Ideally, you'd want the LEAST amount of boost possible, for any given horsepower figure.

However, I can tell you that a guy in Australia makes just under 300kwatw on 18psi with a stock cc CA18DET with forged everything, Tomei and JUN through the head, and a Trust TD06 turbo kit.
