My Ca18det Died

I was suspecting a head gasket issue, so I let my friend take my car to his school's shop. He did a pressure test, and my head gasket was fine. My number 4 cylinder was getting 0 on the compression test on the other hand, meaning it could be the exhaust valve or the rings. I didn't even notice it was running on 3 cylinders, it was still pulling hard. Even tried switching the ignition coil from 3 to 4 just in case, but no luck. Getting the car home was a whole nother story. The car died and wouldn't turn back on, it needed a jump. After the car was started again there was rod knock. I was having lifter tick issues a couple of weeks ago but it was fixed for the most part. This here was a completely different sound. The car is now in my storage port awaiting dissasembly for inspection.

Possilbe problems I can think of:
Exhaust valve is all crushed in the cylinder
Pistion rings
Head Gasket (oil around the 4th cylinder and on the tranny)
Most likly bearings if it is rod knock

Now for the solution. Depending on how bad the motor and what the condition is, I want to rebuild it. If I need to get it bored, honed, balanced, new pistions, etc. etc., then build it into one badass ca18det or get rid of it and go rb20?

I'll keep an update on this thread as I find problems and keep it updated with pics.

Time to rebuild. Get that T28 and make 300+hp happen.

RedneckMar 1, 2008, 3:34 am · #3

Yeah. Rebuilds suck but atleast you don't have to worry about it after that.

no point swapping in a rb20 the $$ you spend on that will build a built ca18det that you can throw a shit load of boost into to

Yeah best thing is to keep an eye on ebay and peeps sellin stuff on forums. Everything else is retarded expensive.

Seriously rebuild and come back stronger. Rebuilding can be fun! Then you can rape your engine knowing how much was put into building it, you will have more confidence while driving it.

yeah i was looking on ebay, but its hard to find cams and pistons and stuff. Ebay is good for shiney pullies and manifolds, and once in a while you can find some nice hks cams and stuff, but yeah its hard. all my friends that have sr's and stuff keep telling me to just build a sr. But, I think im gonna be sticking with a nicely built CA.

There are also a lot of det parts on uk ebay. Probaly japan ebay too.

RedneckMar 2, 2008, 10:15 pm · #10

If I had to guess it would be headgasket.

Poor DET... Needs some love.

We can rebuild it, we have the technology...

most popular companies make ca pistons. if they dont have them instock, they will make them to order.

if you dont mind waiting for shipping, yahoo auctions japan is agreat option, and most of the parts on there are cheap.

rinkya.com or rhdjapan.com among others are great ways to get the parts to your door.

IggyEGuanaMar 3, 2008, 2:05 am · #13

Is there some kind of language converter I can download so i can read the yahoo japan auctions?

Edit: Wait I found it. Shipping costs are way too high to ship stuff from Japan. At least too high for me.

brewster240Mar 3, 2008, 3:05 am · #14

i spent 100 to ship four 17 inch rims from japan to here...

and they came in 4 days.

its all who you know, and/or what services you use.

I usually just run the chain under the engine.

I've heard on NICO that 400 is tops HP for ca18det bottom end.
