i have a stock turbo now thats blown. what would be better for drifting a ball bearing t28 or a non ball bearing t3 with a top mount manifold on a stock ca18det

Youll have to be more specific.

How much power do you want to get, what kind of budget youre working with, etc...

I have a T25g on my CA18ET, itll push 18psi, and thats all that I need.

^^ yeah i agree.
what power are you looking for?

If you want to stay in the same CHRA, then the GT28rs is a great turbo. aka the disco potatoe. Its super fast spool and can flow great numbers for its size.

anything past 14psi i getting out of the effecieny range on the t25g as well as getting the air super hot

i second that the disco potatoe is a great turbo very well matched for the ca18det

I third the disco potato, the faster spool and healty airflow potential will get your wheels broken loose easier to start a drift.

Bart <3 potato? biggrin.gif

I would very seriously consider buying one of those should I go with a new unit. Have only heard good things about them.

what are ppls thoughts on useing an rb20 t3 with a custom huge down pipe. i've been thinkin about making a 3.5-3.75in downpipe and putting a t3 flange on a bottom mount header.

that could work very well and honestly a 2.25 or 2.5 downpipe would be just fine,,, larger isnt always better unless you are building a race car...

If you're getting a Disco, get the smaller of the two exhuast housings.

The larger one (.86?) is meant for SR20-sized engines.

Also, if you're going for a turbo-upgrade of that nature, you'd wanna invest in some cams to make the most of it.

A better option might be a GT28 from an rb25/6. I just sold one for $200 and should have the 2nd around here somewhere. It actually has a larger compressor on it than the rb20 turbo. Unfortunately I dont have any side by side pics. The good thing is they are still a T2 frame, so there would be no modifications (if the housing didnt hit the manifold!)

ya it will more then likely hit but a simple spacer is all you would need

I don't understand why that is and I know I'm about to sound retarded but how does the turbo sizing work and how does it effect the way the turbo works. I'd like to really understand this aspect of turbochargers cuz it would help me select a turbo that will really be right for me. And I'm guessin it'll help casey select a turbo also.

when did the rb25 come with a gt28? i have a turbo off an rb25 and it's a t3.

Agreed.

They also don't like anything more than 12psi.

Yeah they have those dumb ceramic turbine wheels that like to explode at 14-15psi

Back on topic, I really think there are only three real choices here the GT28 from the S15 is a very good turbo and can be had for fairly cheap, the GT28RS disco potato has more breathing room than the S15 turbo and is more efficient and spools just as fast maybe even faster, or if you want to make alot of power with good spool the GT2871R is a good option

depends on your budget really
gearhead313Mar 4, 2008, 2:00 pm · #18

I believe you have a single turbo rb25 t3 then. all twin turbo rb's came with gt28's (to the best of my knowledge). all single turbo rb's came with t3's. The rb turbo that comes apart are the t3 ceramic ones.
