Thinking About Getting A New Engine..

I was thinkin about swapping out my CA20e with a CA18DET.

Wiki says it puts out like 170hp and "that many people have produced over 600 hp with modification."

My reason for posting is pretty much to get any opinion and facts about the matter.

Also, say I got this engine,
from this website
what else would i have to get just to swap it into my stock 1985 200sx.
I could understand there would be quite a few things, it's turbo and redline is higher.

also, i understand these engines came stock in some s12's, I was wondering if the motor mounts might be in the same spot and such.

What would you even do with 600hp? And you'll have to use s13 motor mounts, they fit just fine on the subframe. There's a TON of information and even a writeup for the ca18det swap. Search

its pound for pound better then a SR too. iron block ftw

falkhenDec 22, 2007, 1:14 am · #4

yeah sure Aluminum alloy engine will be better pound for pound, but if beat the crap out of your daily like me. that just wont work.

this is why i don't drive a Honda powered car, any more.

you know what any one can say shit about SR's,CA's and RB's(porker). its where your heart & check book is at...

take this amount of money from what the intial and add more too it.
from SR to CA then RB, hell you don't even need to be Nissan.
Honda, Mitsubishi, Subaru, GM, Ford, Chrysler... make it electric.

RB20DET stock bottum end..300WHP
Draconis current state unknwon... last tested at 192whp(stock) Im sure its much higher.
Randys S13/rb20det.... 256whp stock (boost controller, apexi Neo)

I need to Dyno mine i could guess about 200ish, and if i tuned my cam gears maybe more..

well, most cops have at least 300hp, figured it'd take at least 500 to take them in a straight line. if I got double, im out. And I read most of the stuff on here, just tryina get specific questions answered.
Also, 600 hp is a lot, and maybe one day i'd like that much, but for now im just lookin for a decent engine, preferably not as patheticly weak as the ca20e.

If ya really wanted to know, my choices for engines are ca18det, ka24de.. might go NA with the KA, dunno how worth it it'd be. and last is a 13b.. I loved the rx7's since i was born, so instead of swappin in a 13b i'll prob just get an rx7.
Otherwise i dunno how many people have rotary engines in their s12's and its pretty much fact that i'd blow a load in my pants if i saw one in real life.
and of course, benefits of a 1300cc engine is size and weight.

dont hate me for stating my opinions lol.
I'm not the smartest yet. Also, side question not related to this, well maybe sorta.

I wanna start school at apex tech in NYC, they have an auto mech program for 15k or an auto technician program for 20k.. decisions decisions...

i want to help you, but at the same time, i feel like bashing you for your dumb video's of drifting on the streets, and now talking about running from cops.

you have a lot to learn, and your going about it the hard way.

you're in for a rude awakening.

also, apex tech sucks. your better off with a boces or technical highschool type program.

^^ W3rd.

If you want to be differnt, and have the ability to outrun the cops, drop an LS1 in.

rude awakening? please go on...
eitherway, I just siad, the only thing 600 hp is good for is outrunning cops, never said i need it. I just need something faster than my little baby dick engine.
I went to wilson tech, I didnt learn anything, was debating on taking auto mech 2 there but i dont think it'd be worth it. its only 300$ lol

Julie speaks the truth.
I wanted a CA18DET for a longtime but now I'm a redneck (N/A).
I like the V-6.
VG30E or VG30DE.
I want to get a VG30DE after I destroy my motor.
N/A FTW biggrin.gif

So I guess the rednecks only drive N/A's huh? wink.gif
Good luck trying to destroy that vg30e. They are pretty hard to kill.

the problem with techs schools, they are run like a business first, and a school 2nd. thats been my experience at least, tell you what they can to get you in the door and sign that check, then afterwards who knows. def stay away from lti too.

Bargain shopping for used motors is a bad thing. Spend the extra $$ and go with a reputable importer
bartc_jFeb 11, 2008, 3:36 am · #15

a little note that many may not now is that the sr actually weighs a bit more then the ca18det..... alum block/head are nice to have if the motor was designed right.....you can run a higher cr verses a iron block/head setup with no worries since the heat will dicipitate from the alum motor at a way faster rate then a iron block/head

Personally, I'd buy a halfcut and I'd have to see it before buying..

It isn't some wheels, you are talking one of the most important parts of your car and you do not even wanna check it out first

For sure....thats what I did
ArroFeb 12, 2008, 7:39 pm · #20

yeah, except that you can't "see it before buying it". You buy it. It ships. You get what you get condition-wise. Nobody's gonna let you say, "ehhhh, it looks leaky. I don't want it, ship it back."

Buy a cheapie and rebuild it.

It will work out cheaper in the long run.
