ive read it in the swap guide and other places but has anyone ever done the s13 trans swap? i have an 87 so im assuming its the mkII. is the front half of an s13 drive shaft really all i need? i need verification before i tell my mechanic it'll work, and i go out and find a drive shaft...
S13 Trans?
why not just use your S12 transmission? everything bolts up? Mine's an 87 too, and everything is fine...then again, mine's an 87 turbo..but the VG and CA20 should have the same bellhousings.

Yes you can if you want, if its a CA18DET trans your gold bolts up, SR tranny you need to swap the bellhousing you can use any FS5W tranny if you do this.
For what ever reason the KA,SR, CADET trans seems to hold up better.,.,.,that is for me.
Never done any checking into internals to see the difference other then the cases are stronger and should have less deflection.,.,.,that has been a problem with other makes in the past

lol well i was using my s12 tranny, my car used to be the ca-et as well, but on saturday night i floored it, boost built fine, then i felt everything fall apart....so now im trying to use my spare ca-det tranny to save some time and money rather than searching for another used tranny.
I did a swap with a ca18det tranny (because mine was fj20 so it does not realy fit that well biggrin.gif) and i can verify that all you need is the front part of the det driveshaft, thopu you also have to swap the flange, that bolts up to the other part (it does fit without any custom fabiraction, so thats not a problem)
i now have the DET tranny in my car. i got my mechanic to piece it together. i got an s13 driveshaft but he still had to hone the pilot bushing and swap over the speedo sender unit. and now theres a big hole in my floor, but the BOV has never been so loud
Damn..........makes me wish I hadn't gotten rid of my ca-det tranny, and driveshaft.....oh well closedeyes.gif
its puts the shifter in a much better position too. i'll take pics tomorrow and post them
took me a while but heres how the det tranny sits in my car. the pic is taken in neutral
on a side note, this was my rad a couple weeks ago
Does the OE shifter trim piece still snap in place with the shifter so far back?
nope. not even close sad.gif so now i have to make everything fit again. its been -20 (celcius) and ive been driving around with that hole in the floor....i should probably do something about it soon....
Not the best looking thing ever but its an option. Carpet and the insulation (its underneath) from the pass side of a S13 in the junk yard. Look for a car with floor mats and see the condition of the carpet under them. I cut out the carpet, took it home and then cut it to fit. Double layered it at the opening. The plether boot is out a CRX btw.

i finally started plugging my hole and cutting my shifter console. not quite done the console yet, but i thought i would post what i had so far. with pics! lol
i initially started with 2 pieces of shimstock/sheet metal. the hole had to be made for obvious shifting reasons.
metal covers in place. a good start.
for sound deadening reasons i actually used a piece of the carpet that was on the back of the rear seat. cut to perfection of course smile.gif
and finally the mostly assembled shifter assembly. i didnt try to make it too fancy, as i will have to take it apart when i want to install a b&m shifter.

lmfao, that does sound bad now that you mention it...
Haha
The OEM centre console can be made to fit as a factory look quite easily and without any cutting of it at all.
What you do is make up a couple of aluminium tabs for the front mounts under the dash, so you can screw it in 20-30mm further back. Then you drill new holes in the floor further back to screw the floor screws in 20-30mm further back.
It then screws in as per factory.
There will then be a gap oif 20-30mm at the front under the radio console. You can either leave it or you can cut out a small piece of plastic from an ice cream container side or similar, cover it in some fake carbon fibre contact film and use tiny black screws to screw it to the centre console and your done.
When its finished it all looks factory.
Very easy job too.
too late. i already cut part of it lol. i'll post pics soon...
If you follow the same profile of the curve you hacked out, you could have still used the OEM rubber boot in the floor. Obviously, you would need to cover up the gap at the front of the hole, too.
well, after all that work putting it all together, i bought myself a birthday present.
and then i finally put it back together again. the pic was taken in 1st.
Why didn't you just move the console back an inch or two, as opposed to cutting it?
