Oil Pressure Too High

I'm not sure where the oil pressure should be at. First off I have a mechanical oil pressure guage by autometer. At idle it is reading 40psi. When I rev the motor up to 6000rpm the oil pressure also goes up too. I know thats normal but the readings skyrocket to 100psi. I don't think it's suppose to be that high. I don't want to rev up to 8000rpm just to see if the pressure will go any higher that might blow something up. How high does your oil pressure go to?

try hooking up a mechanical oil pressure gauge and see what it shows

It is a mechanical guage which runs the oil pressure with the turbo feed line.

100PSI is fine.

Do you think 100psi is a little to high? Isn't the averaged oil pressure at 60 or 75psi for turbo and non-turbo? I just want to make sure I don't have anything clogged in the line or block.

That may be a little high....not sure though. Look in the ca18det fsm....if you don't have a copy, look on www.nicoclub.com there is a link on there.
I just have the stock mech gauge on mine, and it seems to read higher than the ca18et did. At idle, it's in the middle of the gauge, 45psi.....and at hwy cruising, 3500-5000 rpms, it's almost pegged out......a little higher on cold days.
Oh, and probably not a good idea to rev it to 8000 rpms huh.gif

100lbs is stupid high..

rookieSep 23, 2007, 4:07 am · #8

Yeah, I think its too high. I'm not an expert on the ca18det motors. This is my first ca18det motor and I don't want to blow something internal up. I'll check other forums and hopefully I'll find something!

It's only a CA18, they die on their own...

Try to clean it out with some diesel, and if theres no improvement then just ignore it.

Mine runs on 100PSI at the top of the rev range, and has been lasting a long time.

seafoam is great for cleaning shit btw

I'll try cleaning my motor on the next oil change. I tried going a little higher on the rpm and now the oil pressure needle goes past the 100psi mark. My guage tops out at 100psi. This is done at idle. I don't know how it will do when I'm driving it. I havent drove it yet, still having trouble with the misfire!

i think my sender isnt working right then. while driving, it only goes to 5opsi, at idle it'll go as low as 15psi when its warmed up.

JonBJan 10, 2008, 1:55 am · #13

Is this when it's cold? When I start mine up it's at 40psi, as the car warms up it lowers.

misterrickJan 10, 2008, 2:43 am · #14

same with mine. it goes down as it warms up

Try running a lighter weight?

Put the stock oil sender in from an S12 CA20 or CA18ET. It goes into the oil pressure switch hole under the alternator.

This will work the stock guage, and therefore give you a better idea.

I wouldn't dare take an engine oil pressure reading from anywhere else but the original location. Unless I was actully testing oil pressure at the turbo for diagnostic reasons.

The oil pump has a regulator on it. You may want to check out the FSM section on that.
