well, I'm in the process of aquiring a FJ20 powered s12, and it's most definitely going to need a rebuild. can anyone tell me about the difficulty of doing this? i have plenty of time, and access to tools. I know i need to buy new seals and gaskets and such, but the thing that's really worrying me is the timing chain. is that any harder than a timing belt, or should i just look for a not-blown engine?
Fj20 Rebuilding
Check out www.fj20.com, then click on "Engine Tech" at the top. When that opens click on either "FJ20ET Engine Manual" or "FJ20E Engine Manual" depending if you are turbo or non-turbo.
Maybe these will give you an idea on what to do for the timing chain once you see it taken apart smile.gif
Also go to the Australian s12 forums there are a number of people there with FJ20 powered s12's. There is a guy in particlular that competes an FJ powered s12 and is a machanic and has rebuilt FJ's numerous times, he knows all the tricks, his forum name is 'pistonfreak', (he's actually just finished rebulibing an FJ20 for someone. Up the top of this page you will see a little white rectangle with Australia written on it,click that and it will take you straight to the Australian s12 forums, go to memberslist and search for him in there. You may have to join so you can pm him.
heh....lol, i hadn't thought of using Aus12, lol....i was poking around the german 200sx forums, and well, for the most part, its one big 'ol riceparty...
I know that there is a instruction video some ware on eBay. maybe that helps???
I say go for it... you gotta learn somehow. just remember to take it slow and triple check everything. Maybe rebuild it to Turbo Spec, like a man.
well....according to my main man Corky, i should be able to run up to 8 pounds of boost on 9.5:1 compression. also, apparently higher compression means more fuel efficiency and off-boost power. i like both of those...
With stock internals, it also means more stress on old parts and more stress on old parts means ovary explosion... and by ovary explosion I of course mean things breaking.
