Hey i was just wondering where is the oil pump located because the engine is making a knocking noise. So what i did to check it was i took the valve cover off and started the car with it off and it wasnt shooting oil. I have oil and lucas in the engine and its not getting oil to the head.thanks.

oil pump is located in the front engine cover. it is turned directly by the crank.

Check your sump for damage, The oil pickup is very close to the botom of the sump so small dents can cause you problems.

when i bought the engine the oil pan was bent already. Could i get it repaired or do i need to buy a new pan?

your going have to pull the oil pan off after draining the oil, check to make sure the oil pump isnt damaged, then dertimine wether or not you can bang the oil pan back to close to its original shape with an hammer, or if you cant, in which case you will need a new oil pan...which would be recommended anyways.

yeah, it has to come off.

sump first, as it has studs from the front cover going through the sump pan.
water pump has to come off too as two of the mounting bolts also hold the front cover on.

dont forget the bolts(i think there is two) that go from the head into the top of the front cover. you might have to remove the water pipe from around the front of the motor to get them.
and good luck getting it all apart without stuffing the head gasket too...

it all has to come off as the oil pump is mounted to the inside of the front cover and is driven by the crank shaft going through it...

how certain are you that it is the pump? and if it is, then the whole front cover housing may need replacement.($$$$)

it seems your oil relief valve came apart from the other thread, but the damage probably wont be the pump, as its the only thing still getting oil to it!

check fj20.com, as there is engine breakdown diagrams on there if you need them.

would the oil relief valve be the reason im not getting oil to the head?

without a doubt!

the oil relief valve having fallen out, leaves a hole as big as the oil pick up tube directly after the pump. so pretty much everything going through the pump is getting dumped into the sump almost immediately...and you wont be getting any oil pressure.

how long was the engine running in this state?if it was knocking as you said, then i would be looking at the bottom end, i.e. main and big end bearings on the crank, as they are likely to have been damaged. who knows what its done to the head....

The engine was running for 3 months before it happened. It was knocking towards the front of the engine but when i took the valve cover off and started it with it off you couldnt hear the knocking.....so im pretty much fed up with the motor and i dont know what to do blink.gif
