So as i'm swapping my engines i noticed this little box. my old one has one but doesn't fit anywhere. my question is what is it and why in some pics i've seen people don't have it.

im not sure what that box is, but that guy is running a volvo 740 rad and intercooler set up, that tank is a pressurized coolant resivoir.

I'm guessing that's a MK.I engine right?  I've seen that on the MK.I's..can't remember what it does and my FSM isn't around.

I'll have a look for you tomorrow morning.

as for the other white container, that's new...somebody definitely added that...but I notice there's no cooland purge tank, so somebody may have replaced their purge tank with that.

My MK1 doesn't have that box.....I thought those were on the MK2's and had something to do with emmissions?

Are they relays?  In the pic it's kinda hard to see....but I do have some relays mounted on a bracket right there in that same area.  I think mine are blue, brown, and green.  Thats all I have on mine in that area

its on my MK1, i thought it was a time control device

/shJul 28, 2006, 5:58 pm · #8

if its a time control device thats no good. i'll need it. my engine is one of those mutt mk 1.5's or something. very mixed. i'm just not getting any spark so i wondered if that would be why.

My mk1 ca20 does not have this box unless it is mounted in about location. I have some relays over there that i moved myself.

Lol @ necrothread its the eccs box and I believe its only on turbo models i havent seen on the ca20

My guess, it is the Pressure Regulator Control Module.  It is suppose to make it easier to start.  I have removed mine, no problems.  I both the CA20 and CA18ET versions.  See if this makes sense:

Mine says A18-800 060 Japan Electronic Control Systems
FSM says "the  pressure regulator control improves the starting of a hot engine by cutting off the intake manifold vacuum pressure and increasing the fuel pressure."
Operates for 3 minutes when water temp is above 203 F and vacuum at vacuum switch is below 10.7 kPa (80mm Hg; 3.15" Hg).
