icon_question.gif i have a bad vibration through the frist 4 gears now it was just the first through third. it is getting worse thought it could be the driveshaft bearing not for sure. also have a clang some where in the drive train not sure thought maybe the rear half shafts. The virbration through forth gear feels like the driveshaft is hopping or the transnission but the mounts look good please help. new here love the site and info

Welcome to the Club.
As for you problem, motor and tranny mounts come to mind, but it's puzzling that it's worse in the lower gears. Is it worse when you're accelerating or is it the same even if you're at a steady speed in the lower gears?

it does it when i am accelerating when i steady out it stops but when i get back onit does it again . also thought it could be the clutch have had the car three years so i don't when the clutch was done last. the clank sounds like it is coming from the rear end don't want to replace the wrong shaft to much to waste. love the car is there a place to see were everyone live hope someone is close to cincinnati ohio. the clank was there before the virbration started. thanks

I'd get under the car and check the U joint. But in my experiance ujoints usually get worse with speed.

Your tranny is dead! Rebuild it, if it's not fried, or get another one.

Sorry for the bad news.

I had the same problem with the clunking while letting the clutch out. When I got under the car to try and find out why the parking break wouldnt work, I noticed that when I pulled the break cable, the entire rear crossmember and suspension moved about 1/4 of an inch. So I had to take out the crossmember bushing and cut it down about 3/8ths of an inch(there is a thick steel collar in the center). Now its all back together and there's no clanking.

i have a big clunk in my rear end when i take off and sometimes when i shift, its not the cv axles, sounds like the lash between the pinion gear and diff is way off, i am hoping to park it for the winter soon, but if my shadow project dosnt fix itsself soon i am going to be stuck with it for a while

I'd say most of us here have the dunk/clunk sound. That is the differential mount insulator (the one above the diff) being worn out.

i have a vibration also but its not there untill i get up on it or if i try to shift fast i hear the notorious clunk i had a friend look at it who is a mechanic and he said it was my center bearing for the drive shaft im not sure if this help you but if i were you i would get that checked.

btw: my friend said he could move the drive shaft with his hand im not sure how much but i was wondering if even that bearing was fixed does the drive shaft have some play in it or shood it not move and be solid?? thanx Kevin

Ron AmundsonDec 10, 2003, 10:03 pm · #20

The drive shaft insulator does have some play, as its flexible. They have not been discontinued. I got one from Nissan about 2 months ago. It was about $8 (cheapest Nissan part ever). Its just a peice of low durometer rubber strip that has to be glued in place.

Now if the bearing is going out, thats another story, Bumper-Bumper had the whole assembly for $50.
