rear brake squeak

I have been having problems with my rear brakes making squeaking sounds when i first start in first gear or go over bumps in the road. At first i thought the rear calipers might be hanging up a bit, but i have replaced both of the rear calipers recently and it didn't solve the problem. Seems like the pads are coming into contact with the rotor surface for a short amount of time and making the squeak. Any ideas on how to stop it or is it just the type of pad material?

It may just be the pad's material. You might want to check if the cable(s) is hanging and not the calipers. I take it you used anti squeak compound on the pads, if not that could be the problem. Check if the pads are not hanging either.

Yeah its not the emergency brake cable either as i have adjusted that and made sure its not too tight. The car rolls fine so nothing is hanging. What is this anti squeal stuff you speak of?

did you use a anti squeal compound onthe backs of the pads when you put them on... that or even blue rtv works great to keep the brakes from making noise

check for the pad shims too.

Well guys today i put some of that CRC orange goop junk on the pads that is designed to stop the squeal. Also used some brake grease in the apporiate areas. Still gettting the squeal from stops and when the car leans to one side or another. Both rear calipers are new rebuilds and don't stick. I'm guessing now it might just be the pad material or something. Any thoughts?

Just because the calipers are rebuilt doesn't mean that one or both are not dragging. "Just been through this with a work truck"

No i have verified that they aren't dragging at all. The car will roll fine on the slightest of grades. I had a caliper hanging on this car in the past so i know what it feels like.

Are you using original Nissan pads? Some after market pads have poor tolerance with the backing plates. Take a grinder and take out a few thou where the plate slides on the spring clips/guide.

cheapo Albany pads form Autozone probably the whole reason i'm having this problem. Funny thing is they didn't make a sound for the first few hundred or a thousand miles.

so it squeaks when leaning? or only when leaning and braking?

ahoffman83Dec 9, 2003, 7:41 am · #13

leaning and not braking. Today i noticed that it hasn't been squeaking as much as usual and not doing it when i hit bumps in the road like it used to. Only an occasional quick sqeak when i start moving sometimes.

Just my 2¢ ... but did you bleed the brakes when you did the pads? How's the 2 foot-to-the-floor braking performance?

I only ask, because I had a squeak that was only really noticeable right after startup. Granted mine was from the front. But it was horrible. It would squeak a bit going over the speed bump in the parking lot with the brakes applied (car's too low to go over it at speed, big bump, even the Charger will scrape). I bled the brakes just out of "what should I do today" and man, I felt like a tool. icon_redface.gif I don't know if the bleed took up some slack in the calipers or what, but the squeak is gone, and if I nail the brakes, I can send myself into the windshield now.

Yeah my dad and i have bled the brakes. The brakes are awesome and the pedal is nice and firm and where it should be. Good point, not sure what the deal is with the squeak but i'm just going to leave it be since i can't seem to figure it out.

Well guys i have fixed the squeak. It turns out it wasn't the brakes after all but it was the exhaust system. There was a loose bolt on one of the hangers and when i reved it up to go in 1st it would squeak leading me to believe it was the brakes.
