I have an 86 200sx turbo. I have a major job to do on it. Nissan says that the book tells me the job will cost around 900cad. So I wanna do it myself. Im goona need a manifold to turbo gasket, 2 new head to manifold gaskets, and a turbo to downpipe gasket.. I already ordered the parts, but I need somebody to quickly explain the basics of taking off the turbo itself. Or even a web page to refer me to. The big book I have doesnt help worth crap... So ya, somebody gimme some info.. thanks...

Wacomuk where did you get them spanners from, I could realy do with a set of them.
I ended up having to use a ring spanner with a ratchet type end on it that I cut in half. icon_confused.gif

Hi

I'm doing exactly the same job or I was until I found that the Manifold nut at the back has been rounded off. I managed to get a set of Obstruction Ring spanners for £10 but these are useless as they won't catch. The reason I'm doing it is because the Turbo Rattles like a bag of bolts. How am I going to remove this nut or is the only option to cut the stud off in situ ???

Any help would be appreciated, Thanks

Steve

That could be a tricky one! But Im sure there will be away round it I'll have to have a look at my car and have a think? (just see what tools I can fit down the small gap).

In the past I have used araldite glue (2 part epoxy resin) to actually glue a spanner to a rounded off nut. Leave it over night then try undoing the nut the next day. However this only worked once and it will make a mess of your spanner. It can also be hard getting the spanner off the nut once it has lossened!

In a worst case scenario you could remove the whole head with manifold, turbo and turbo down pipe attached. Then sort it all out on the work bench! icon_sad.gif .
That would have to be the very last resort as nissan likes to charge silly money for its gaskets!

Nearly done it, I have been using a junior hacksaw blade for Three hours today to cut off the stud just below the nut. I've got a few blisters and cuts but I've only got a few MM to go but the light ran out. Tomorrow I'll finish it off then hopefully I can just replace the stud ( £1.10 from Nissan).

God, Why can't they make things simple !

why would you go to nissan for exhaust maniflod gaskets ;you can get them at autozone for less than 15 bucksUS, then pull the whold exhaust amnifld and turbo and be able to work on it a little easyer

Finally done it! I kept sawing for around Two hours today and then I used a Long 1/2 inch extension bar and hit it with a hammer and the nut snapped off. To get the bottom bit of the stud out I used a tap & Dye set and it came out easily leaving the thread OK. I just fitted a New stud and now I'm waiting for the Turbo to be recon'd. Just to let you know it was cracked in the exhaust housing and was RED in colour. I think this is because the Last owner was using LRP instead of using unleaded and an additive like Castrol Valve Master Plus. I'll make sure I use the bendy spanner when refitting the turbo!

Cheers
