on my right rear wheel. does this mean i need a new hub, or just bearings? i hear the hub job is like 25mins, if bearings are replaceable and cheaper than a hub then how long/hard would that be?
gonna need to get this done pretty quick, i dont feel safe on highways anymore.......

wheel bearings shot......
there's 2 bearings, an inner and outer.
remove the halfshaft
remove the caliper
remove the disc
remove the stub axle(axle shaft) nut - this thing is really on there, you'll need a johnson bar for sure. (torqued to 217-289 ft. lbs)
remove the axle stub ... you'll need a slide hammer and something to bolt it to the shaft.
the outer bearing will come out with the stub axle
pull out the companion flange, and the grease seal and inner bearing can come out.
-INSTALL-
press the outer bearing onto the stub axle, sealed side facing the axle
reassemble the same way you disassembled it.

the front would take about 45min if you are familiar with tkaeing it apart the rear wil take at least 1-2hours a side... theres a shitload to do to get the rears ones out...

If the bearings are salvagable then re-grease them. Use a proper re-greasing press or you'll just end up doing the whole job again shortly. Make sure that you pre-load the bearings correctly -- not too tight or too lose, or you will have a significant effect on their life. Ask me if you need a few more tips as I just did the front bearings with my friend, and I'm thinking of doing the rears since they have a *little* play in them...

i was talking about "re-packing" the wheel bearings themselves. i didn't word it quite right. but you know what i'm talking about? they sell those little plastic greasers that you put the bearing in and then you press down with your foot. the old, dirty bearing grease is discharged and the fresh grease is packed inside. the poor man's way to re-grease a bearing is to just try to pack it in with your hand. but that doesn't quite work as well and that's what i'm saying you should stay away from (if possible)

Guess u can say i am a poor man.. i have repacked bearings by hand for close to thirty years. and i also have a industrial numatic bearing packer at work. the only time i will use bearing packer is on very large bearings, we deal with bearings up to and some time bigger than 12 inches in diameter on inner race.
on smaller bearings nothing can beat hand packed bearing, just takes practice and make sure you fill bearing completely and leave no air pockets. any way thats JMO.

i just put the bearings into some gas to get rid of all the grease and then i just repack them by hand...

I only use a bearing packer when absolutely necessary, eg on a snowmobile trailer in the middle of winter along side a road.....
I don't think you can evey be sure that all of the old grease and contamination is ever removed from wheel bearings unless you carefully clean and regrease them by hand. Bearing packers unless kept super clean, or cleaned before every use always seem to pick up some level of dirt or contamination. On a passenger car, it may not be an issue except for bearing life, but on critical applications, hand packing with clean hands is the only way to go IMHO.
Thanks
Ron

i soaked my old bearings in brake parts cleaner and shook 'em around a lot. there was dirt, grime, grease... you name it... flying everywhere.
the bearing packer that i used was clean, but not meticulous. even after all that junk came out with the brake parts cleaner, there was more dark grease that was squeezed out by the bearing packer, and that's what makes me think that it's a useful tool.
just for discussion sake, how would i have gotten the left over grease that embedded all the way in the bearing without using the packer? maybe i could've soaked it longer and shaken it more, but I feel that I was quite thorough as it is.
