I got my Canon PowerShot A400 for $120 on sale (normally $150), it's 3.2 Megapixels, uses SD chips (the new standard), has 7x zoom, ful mpeg video record w/sound AND onboard audio/video playback. It can also directprint to a Canon inkjet. Comes with all the software you need to edit and share photos and video.

I then bought two PNG 128MB SD chips for a mere $20 a piece at Best Buy. I have filled one to 104MB and am at 63 really hi resolution pictures and shooting room for more. Proly get to 75 or 80 before it is full.
Optical zoom > Digital zoom
I'd look at a well-built camera that can fit in your pocket (less likely to get dropped if it's in your pocket) ...
Megapixels = overrated ... Who would honestly use a 2080x1560 (3.2 MPixel) picture ? That's over four times the size of most people's desktops (1024x768 ) ...
its incase u want to get printed out and blown up

4 megapixels is more than enough to get you a good 10x7 print out. unless you're doing like huge posters, you dont'need to go larger than 4MP
be wary of lots of optical zoom tho.
you may get some tunnel distortion around the edges at full extention.

look at this website for lots of good digi-cam reviews.
fuji and olympics cameras don't use SD, so dont' bother looking at those if you're hell bent on sd cards only.
canon does..but iono who else
I didn't notice a difference in quality between my dad's 1.92 MPixel Canon and film camera for 8x10s ... I would imagine 3+ would be indistinguishable as well ... And since pretty much all cameras on the market these days have high MPixel count, I wouldn't necessarily think to myself, "Well, this one is 4 megapixels, so I should get it over the 2.8 megapixel camera." In my somewhat inexperienced opinion, pixel count isn't all there is to picture quality in a digital camera ... Therefore, overrated ... especially since most people I know don't even get their pictures developed, they just send them in MASSIVE files via e-mail :p
You guys are correct, once you've got 2 or 3 megapixel resolution, the quality of the rest of the camera is what's important unless you're wanting to enlarge/print. For general use, and especially for taking pics to upload, 3 pixel is fine or overkill even. Generally though, it's hard to find a low-pixel-count camera nowadays that is nicely built. You must understand that it's the quality of the lens and the internal image processing that really make a good digital camera. Crappy lens with lots of pixels just gives you big, blurry pictures, and if the processing isn't up-to-par the colors may get washed out in harsh lighting conditions, or the camera may not even be able to expose the image correctly (too bright/too dark).

Another excellent camera research destination.
I had a WalMart sourced Samsung Digimax a couple years ago that wasn't worth half the $120 I paid for it. Then I paid almost three times that for a Canon PowerShot A70 and love it. I'd recommend Canon products :-D but if you can, maybe try to find a place that will let you see some example output of whatever camera on a computer screen, if you can't find a review with examples like on Imaging Resource. One examaple from that Samsung would have saved me money! [note: I hate to bash a product, I haven't looked at Samsungs lately, maybe they've improved, but I'd want to see output first]
anything over 2 megapixel is good. What is more important than the megapixels is the lens. A lot of companies will raise the megapixels to make use for a lower quality lens. Your best bet is to buy SLR digital camera. Or look through online ratings to find a camera that has the best picture for the price you can afford.
you guys are frickin AWESOME!! thak you soooo much!
