well i'm definitely going to be selling my CA20E S12, and i might also be selling my '88 toyota 4x4 truck..
But i am looking for another car.. something a little newer and quicker
i'm looking for something under $5000
the only main criteria that i have is for it to look good and be fast
i would prefer for it to be RWD and engine wise i would prefer a V6, but 4 cylinder is fine if its turbo or torquey like the KA24
i'm not looking for something to go racing in, but just something to have a little fun every now and then, and be able to slap some rims on it and have it be a good looking car
so if you guys could give me some or your opinions, i would greatly appreciate it, b/c it might open my mind up to some other cars that i may have overlooked before!
Thanks
need opinions once again

Z31 turbo.
Plenty of stock power.
Plenty of aftermarket bolt-ons.
Plenty of suspension upgrades.
A clean one can come within your budget of $5K.
Looks nice, can be had with all the modern creature comforts (A/C, power windows, power doorlocks, power driver seat, etc.)
Solid, reliable engine platform.
Not all that hard to find.
Junkyard parts are plentiful and cheap.
Tuning knowledge is plentiful.
Enthusiast numbers are plentiful.
And last but most definitely not least...
You already have a VG-equipped S12 (which it sounds like you are keeping, thankfully ;) ), so why not add it's bigger fraternal twin to your collection? You already know how to work on a VG setup.
believe it or not, that was actually the 1st car that i had on my list..
b/c i've always wanted a 300zx,.. and also i really want a turbo car!!!!
Yeah gotta love the z31 theres some great site around detailing every little thing you would ever need to know about them which is nice to know and mmm vg30det... i test drove a n/a and they drive nice so would love to have a go at a turbo
:lol: Hendrick I think I even convinced myself! When I look at it the way I laid it out above, it's a pretty sweet car.
Generation 4 Maxima ('95-'99). Blue Book on a '95 with 5spd is around $5k.
All come stock with:
*190hp VQ30DE motor.... 0-60, 6.5sec stock
* Top speed....SE 145, GXE & GLE 115 governed, but easily disabled.
* power windows
* power locks
* A/C
* Cruise
Plenty of performance parts support for them from CAI intakes to 280hp blower kits.....and everything in between.
OR
'89-'92 Supra turbo......didn't include the '86 1/2-'88 because they have less HP
Eh, I gotta disagree with the Z31 option. Don't get me wrong, I like them, but you'll be in the exact same boat, with no suspension options, bad camber in the rear if you lower it, etc. If you're looking for something newer and different, get something newer and different. How about some of these:
2nd Gen Mazda RX-7 Turbo II
1st or 2nd Gen Eclipse/Talon Turbo All Wheel Drive
Even Z32 NA's are getting pretty close to $5K.
Toyota MR2
I also like Keith suggestion of the 89-92 Toyota Supra Turbo
240sx with sr20det
Yep, if I wanted a torquey RWD import, the Toyota Supra Turbo would be high on the list.
Thanks to Canada's importation laws, we are now able to import 1990 1JZ-GTE powered Supra's. :) What a blast that would be, hey? And final costs to import it here are around the $8000cdn mark.
Maxima = ugly, 4 door, FWD, heavy pig with only 190hp and no turbo to get more power easilly.
Mk III Supra Turbo = attractive, RWD, tuneable, more expensive than should be, heavy pig with electrical issues. At least it can handle a 1JZ/2JZ swap, but that's some $$$$
Mazda RX-7 (FC) Turbo II = hard-to-find, premium-priced (for its age), tricky-to-tune (ask any boosted rotary guy), learning-curve-required (whole new ballgame with rotary), hardto work on (ever tried to? I have, many things are a PITA to get to unerhood), medium weight car.
1G Eclipse/Talon AWD = driveline-weak, notchy-transmissioned, electronically-troublesome, expensive (for its age), hard-to-find, expensive-to-tune, heavy pig of a car (and FWD versions aren't all that much better).
2G Eclipse/Talon AWD = same as above, but add crankwalk, alot more money, and alot harder to find.
1G Toyota MR2 = small, spinout-prone, lightweight beercan with 80's transformer looks and no convenience room in cab. Might make a nice toy but not a good choice for a "get in and go" or "daily driver".
2G Toyota MR2 = almost as small, almost as light, harder to find (turbo even MORE hard to find), not much more cabroom, but newer so possible more reliable car. Still not very practical.
Z31 = attractive, RWD, tuneable, stout engined, priced right, no major electrical issues, reliable, SE S12-similar, aftermarket-supported, race-proven, cab-spacious, medium weight car that is priced very resonably for what you get.
And if you really want to go further with this...
Dodge Daytona Shelby Turbo II = FWD (yeah, yeah, but read on), simple-to-tune, reliable electrically, stout-engined, turbo-equipped, intercooled, strong-transmissioned, nicely-braked, easilly-tuned, community-supported, spaciously-cabbed, MAP-sensor controlled, reasonably attractive, not all that hard to find, not all that pricey to buy, medium weight car.
Who says Z31 has no suspension options? If it weren't for Z31 suspension options, WE would have no suspension options, and if anyone has been following along the past year, we DO have suspension options. There are a number of companies listing both springs and shocks/struts (some even knob adjustable) for Z31, and there's big brake upgrades, swaybars, bushing kits, etc.
Motorsport Auto alone carries a plethora of parts (including suspension) for the Z31, and there are other venors who do as well.
Guys, remember, I didn't come from Nissan enthusiasm. I started out elsewhere, and have put my dues in the DSM community, spent lots of time around Supra guys, am good friends with a very knowledgeable rotary guy, have done my homework on late-model Nissan sports cars, and even spent time with the modern VW tuning world. I'm comming from many different angles on this, and I still say, the Z31 is hands down the choice for his criteria as he put forth to us. That's not even considering that he presently owns an SE V6, which means he is already quite familiar with the VG30 configuration. A VG30ET-powered Z31 is the next logical step, and can be kept relatively modest while still allowing for it to be quite fast, and retain all the creature comforts he might want. And it is RWD, and doesn't look half bad (modestly stated) if I do say so myself.
In fact, if I ever wreck or blow up the 280ZX, I will be looking for a Z31 Turbo immediately afterwards.

I beg to differ. Yeah the first gen Maxima's with the VG30 were heavy, ugly, and slow......but the 4th gen ones like the one I have are no joke. I have smoked plenty of 5.0L, and 4.6L mustangs with it and the only mods I have are a set of Eibach/Tokico lowering goodies, and 17x8 inch wheel package....oh and a K&N replacement flat panel filter.
Stillen has a supercharger kit which bumps hp from 190 to 280
There are also turbo kits out there like this one that bumps WHP to 538, and torque to 603 @ 14psi

Maxima's are nothing to scoff at. Extremely tunable and very reliable, and only 2900lbs in 5 speed form. Their only downfall is the choice of Nissan to make it a FWD car. :( I guess it was never designed to be a sports car though. People are just turning it into a sports car now with the aftermarket.
And ohhh the DSM. :wall: So much money dumped into my Talons, so much time spent on jackstands with broken parts. Mitsubishi had amazing designers, but horrible engineers. The design is so perfect: great body lines, great suspension setup, perfect modular drivetrain, nice weight distrobution. But when it came to making the car the way the designers hoped, they dropped the ball big time. I don't know if it was cost cutting measures, or Chrysler stepping in and putting their foot down on engineering decisions, but just stupid...

Hey, you're entitled to your opinion, and I agree with you on some points, but I have to disagree with you on the suspension. Sure, there are parts you can upgrade, and they're the same ones you can upgrade on the S12. But throwing on some adjustable shocks/struts and some lowering springs will not overcome the engineering problems that the suspension geometry attributes. The front suspension is fine. Not great, but fine. The rear semi trailing arm suspension sucks. I can't emphasize that enough. It's a terrible design that, without careful modification and know how, will never work to the advantage of the driver. If you lower the car to a ride height that promotes a good low center of gravity, the camber in the rear is excessive. Even with an LSD in my car, because of the rear camber, I still can't launch worth a crap because I don't have enough contact patch! Anyway, yes, the Z31 is still a fairly good platform, but I guess it all depends on what is meant by fast or quick. However, since Henge did state it wouldn't be a track car, just for fun, I guess it doesn't matter that much. It also wouldn't matter how convenient it was, so the MR2 would still be a great choice.
All this is well and good, but when it comes down to it, it's Henge's choice, not ours, and it's up to him to drive some of them and choose which one feels best to him. I've wanted quite a number of different cars in the past, and took the chance to test drive them. After test driving them, I found it quite amazing how the feel of the car from the driver's seat made such a profound impact. Some cars I got into just didn't feel right. They didn't feel like "my" car. So, Henge, go try a few out and see what you think. Keep an open mind, but know what you want out of the car.
I agree. The Z31 would be the one I would pick...just by the stand point that there is some aftermarket, the layout is somewhat similar to that of the S12, and because the Z31 has more history than the Maxima. However both the Maxima, and the Z31 can be built and I have driven in a Maxima before and it wasn't that bad. It will basically come down to whether you want to keep with a RWD setup, or if you want something with 4 doors...8)
there is a guy down here running a t78 on a stock vq30 motor. no fuel, no forgies no nothing. it hits boost at like 4700 rpms and he has already gone through like 3 motors....

Yup that guys must be some kind of moron!!
well i went and test drove the 1st car yesterday.. i'm not gonna say what it was, i'm just going to post a pic and see if someone can guess what it is..
anyways.. it was at this lil "used car dealership" and so i went in.. the guy let me take the car without me even giving him, or showing him my license
so anyways, i drove the car about 1/4 up the road and the damn thing started to sputter and then cut off and wouldnt fire up again,.. the fuel gauge still said that the tank was over half full so either it was broken, or there was a problem somewhere in the fuel system.. anyways of course i'm not going to get that car, but if i can find another one like it (which will be hard) i might get one..
ANYWAYS,.. here is the pic, first one to guess it right gets.. a cookie? :dontknow:
http://kobuhei.ktplan.net/405gallery/405-1.jpg
OMG it's a freakin Puke-O (Peugot). Please o Please don't but one of those... :hit: :hit:
I thought you wanted something faster? :mrgreen:
have you driven one? they actually surprisingly quick.. and compared to my shitty running SE it IS FASTER!!
ok so you got peugeot right.. but what model??
It's a Peugot 405. Is it the 16 valve?
It's a Peugot 405. Is it the 16 valve?
correct you are!
its got a 1.9L Twin Cam 16V inline 4
150HP 130ftlb.
How much for that pos? Dude....if you're looking at 4 doors.....I'm telling you, find a '95'-'99 Maxima to test drive. You won't be disappointed.
if you're bored you could always build the car:

the guy still wanted like $1500 cash.. but the most i would've paid anyways is $1000,.. but like i said.. i wouldnt get one unless i got it in good condition anyways, and i took a look on autotrader and found 0, and only found 1 on cars.com but that wasnt the Mi16, it was just the S with has a 1.9L 110hp engine and it was automatic..
the only reason i even went to go look at this one was because my friend had a similar one (also a Mi16) in good condition and i really liked it
but really, i would rather just stick to a 2 door car.. hell, 2 seater is really my top choice
but i'm only human, so i'm going to change my mind from time to time and i'll also make exceptions
the reason i started this thread was just to get an idea of some other cars that you guys like and know are reliable
this is just a side note.. what do you guys think of the '96+ Audi A4 1.8T (5spd of course)
http://autooboz.site.kz/foto/audi/audi_a4(1996).jpg
The early Audi/Volkswagen 1.8T motors had some issues. Do some searches on that motor, as I'm not exactly sure what the issues were. I do love that body style A4 though.
On a side note, I actually kinda like that Peugot 405. I wish we got the 206 over here.
If u want a fast car look for nissan suny GTiR 2.0 liter engine SR20DET 240 hp and a 4wd and about 950-1000 kg of weith. Easy to tune but if u go to far with the power the drivetrain may brake
Or a Mazda 323 GTR 1,8 liter turbo 170 hp and a 4wd.(very weak drive train)
And a european wersion Peugot 405 like one on the picture above but T16 with 4wd and a 2,0 liter turbo engine withe something about 200 hp (Ari vatanen(i think) drove one of those on a pikes pik climb.

well as much as i would love to get anyone of those cars.. i dont think we ever got any of those here in the US..
That's sad to see it go even the yota too? Well good luck with it.
