I'm going to Japan shortly. I have lived and worked in Japan previously and have had experience sourcing, buying and exporting cars from there to Australia as a side business . I'm toying with getting an FJ20ET s12 Silvia/Gazelle,(or maybe some other 15+ year old thing folks may be interested in) if someone wants one. I would only do this for a serious buyer, (not for myself, I've been there done that with importing cars). Vehicle cost would come out at about $5000 or so for an s12, (maybe $4500 or better depending on the purchase price), all up. Included in that is sourcing, buying, transport to port, shipping from port Japanese port to Australia (used to be about $1400 - $1500, now I'd have to check), (sorry North American and other peoples but I have never shipped elsewhere so wouldn't be interested in doing that as its supposed to be a holiday with my wifes folks so don't want to much aggravation), Australian port fees, customs agent, customs duty (= 15% x purchase price + transport costs), etc..
Put all that in so that people realize the expenses involved in getting a car to Australia.
Any mods needed here for rego approval/mod plate would be up to the buyer, (in the past for a 15 year old car or private import it was just drivers side mirror glass replacement, (used to cost me $17 from a glass place), welding in child restraint anchor points i.e. for the bolts needed when you anchor a toddler/baby seat(less than $100), and that was it,(that was 3 years ago though)).

You also have to fit new rear seat belts and get side intrusion bars fitted inside the doors.
I had mine done about 4 months ago.

Oh Okay they've tightened up since 2001. Is that Australia wide,( i.e. demanded by the Commonwealth Transport Department), laws or as per SA Transportand other Southern state transport departments?

How about an R180 2 or 1.5 way mechanical LSD.

Australia wide i think.
Its not huge $$$ or anything, just something else that needs to be done.

Thanks for the info mate. I'll have to go and peruse the commonwealth transport departments amendments to the import laws. I used to know them back to front, but haven't kept up with them for the past couple of years.
