Does anybody know of a good radar detector that isn't too expensive. preferrably under $200. that works. thanks

I have escort 8500 x50 radar dector which KICKS ASS. It will detect over 2mil+ if a cop is pointing one. I live here in the bay area and I say, it works. When I was in LA with Jason (Arro) I was cop searcher and caught where they're hiding.
I know it's $320 but I rather pay that then a speeding over $340. Qouted from San Jose police to my friend. You can get one on ebay for less

I dont have one, but if I did I would bet the Valentine One system. It has arrows that point to witch way the signal is coming from. But then again, radar dectors only work wen the police radar is switched on. They can have it off, sit in a parking lot and still pull you over for something other than speeding... Like drag racing or reckless driving.

Sorry but i find radar detectors a waste of time.....mainly cause i go by the saying that if they point it at you its too late, and thats all radars do, is tell you when you are caught.

Precisely, which is why you get a radar jammer. Oddly enough, in ACT radar detectors are illegal :no: but there's no law against using a radar jammer (yet) and they're much more effective. When you get pinged, you don't know what's happened but rest assured, neither do they :spy:
I'll let you guys know when I find one, been looking for a while but -as yet- to no avail.

It not too late when you pick up the signal! They might be in a parking lot zapping everyone that goes by. That when you pick that signal up. PLUS- we are talking about radar detectors, not speed gun detectors. The radar is mounted on the dash and they can turn it on to get a good estimate on how fast an object is going when pointed in that direction. So cops may be driving around with it on or off. With a detector, you can tell when they have it on, and about where they are.

Yeah I agree with that cuz I was in that situation when I was going 82mph mine went off and down the their was one. I also agree if they don't have it on then use my 5 and 10 second rule. Look in the back mirror 5secs then 10secs. It works. Ask Arro when we were going to the beach.

Nemisis....sorry you are correct. I was thinking of speed guns....funnily enough i still have yet to see a radar detector in SA. Mainly guns, including the on board car ones.
Never the less why don't we just drive safely? If u wanna speed do it the right way and follow someones tail that IS speeding so he will get caught not you. :P
Like me mate taught me "the guy in front is your speeding fine"

Yeah, I'd rather be the man in the middle, but I've seen State Troopers around here pull over 3-4 cars over at a time. Radar detectors are nice, but I agree, just drive like you have some sense and you won't need one. You'll get a lotta false alarms too with a radar detector, but I remember the cheaper stick on the windshield types (I think Bell makes one) were around $150 last time I checked. They're illegal in VA, but not in NC, but if I had one I'd mount it up on top of the mirror and run the wire inconspicuosly (sp?), but the Troopers in VA have radar detector detectors, so even if you have it on, they'll pull you over and confiscate it...

Yup ... and they use laser here, not radar.
Better for picking off US tourists as they cross the border wondering why their detecor didn't go off ;)
But interestingly enough, if you send out a radar sigal, rather than "jam" it screws up the gun.
If you point one radar detector at another one, it will read something ludicrous, and register a fault.
The car's are equipped with front/rear facing laser (looks like a cannister sticking out of the window) and they are calibrated to work while driving - which means they can pick you up approaching or leaving.
Or they'll use laser to tag you off a bridge, then have someone down the road to pick you up.
Just be your own cop detector ... once you know how to look for them, they're pretty easy to spot. Other than that, use your own judgement. Cops are lazy and set up traps pretty much in the same places around here all the time.
Supposedly if your car is super clean and waxed, the laser will not bounce properly. But I'm not about to bust out the turtle wax just to find out.
