I've been wanting to build a road racer for a while now, but I was gonna build something I was a little more familiar with using a lot of parts off of the circle track cars that I already know pretty good. But, I'm thinking with how cheap you can get S12's and how cheap the parts are for them, it might be a better car to learn on. The 200SX I had racing circle track was a VERY forgiving car, very underpowered, but the brakes and handling I think were probably about the best in the field.
Anybody have any experience with the SCCA IT class? I've been looking all over trying to find a complete rule book to look over, but all I can find is rule changes... :wall:
This probably wouldn't be something I would do right away, but I'm thinking about starting to stockpile some parts now anyway...
I know there was one on ebay about a month ago that was an VG30 car. I was thinking more of the turbo for better weight distribution...
What do you guys think?
Thinking about building an S12 IT car

hmm ... I've never heard of IT racing.
I tried the SCCA home page, and no luck there.
Improved Touring. The SCCA website is about the most retarded I've ever seen... :wall: Check out: http://www.improvedtouring.com
[edit] It's got a pig-nose S13 on the front page... :mike:

im sure someone knows
Yeah, I was just trying to poke around a little before I started asking dumb newbie questions... :RTFM:
I've never been impressed with the sociability of road racers, especially when a redneck like me trys to join em... :boxing:
Joel,
Starting with the Improved Touring web site is a start. If you have not been involved with any SCCA Club racing activities, most of the discussion will be over your head (steep learning curve). That said, there are IT races at Virginia International Raceway (www.virclub.com) outside of Danville, VA. The web site indicates the track is a club. It is, but not like a Golf Club. As a club, if you join, you get track time and VIP passes to events, you do not need to be a member to attend the races as a spectator. I race there and am not a member, only a member of SCCA.
There is are two IT races (and other classes) at VIR in October (22-23 and 30-31), check out www.ncrscca.com for schedule information. I plan to race October 30-31, if you get to the race look me up. I race a 1984 notch (CA20E), copper color, with the number 11 on the side.
There is another 1985 hatch that I race against (CA20E), and have heard of V6 hatch's.
When you deciding to building a race car or buy one, you need to think very hard at why and what. Why do you want to build? What do you want to do with the car when it is finished?
I purchased my built 200SX for the price. I could not build a car for the price of this one, plus the purchase price included spare parts (mostly extra engine parts). 200SX's can probably be competitive (top 10, maybe better?), I am not there with mine, both car setup and personal driving experience.
I Autocrossed (Solo II) for years, and worked races for years, these are two activites that can get you involved with the club, meet people, make contacts for parts, help, recommendations, opinions, etc.
Thanks a lot! I will definetly try to make it out there and check out the racing. I've been meaning to go up and watch a few races up there, they're only about an hour away from where I live. Plus I'm about 2.5 hours to Charlotte, and within driving distance of the Carolina Motorsports Park. I will definetly be keeping my eyes open for a car already built, since I have enough racing experience to know that it's almost ALWAYS cheaper to buy one already built.
The reason I was thinking about building it myself is that I've got quite a few parts already stacked up, plus we have all the equipment at our other shop to do all the fabrication of rollcages and such. We mostly work on circle track cars, so this is kind of a new venture for me, but one that I have been wanting to do for some time now.
I will definetly hunt you down if I make it to the October race... :D
