i was just lookin through the new sport compact car and they took and painted their project STI flat black and i was just inspired. i think i want to paint the silvia flat black with some nice bronze, gunmetal,or flat black rims as well. what does everyone think about that?

geoffdonkdate not saved · #2

i've always been worried about flat black. it's so porous compared to a glossy black or something with a clear coat. i think it'd be extremely susceptible of blemishes.

Hey geoff, i think flat black looks sick, it has so many benefits: Easy to match paint it you get new booboos, if it looks dull, spray it again, no big deal. That silvia i got from the auction is flat black with advan gold rims!! looks sick, and yup i got the rims. Another benefit of flat black is that you dont see imperfections as much, my engine bay is flat black... i'd say do it!!!!!

my engine bay on my s12 is flat black, and the s13 I bought is completely flat black especially from all the sut from the engine fire. I have a car domain site but I dont know the link, do a search on recaro and you should find a link to pics of my seats.

i was reading the STI edition in AutoZone today. Pretty cool looking and they did a DAMN good job and preping and painting it for being in their garage.

heh ... just remember, there's a difference between rattle-canning your car flat black, and painting your car flat black.

I've seen a lot of cars recently done in flat black, but these cars were done just like any other, except with metallic flat black. I know it sounds kind of like a contadiction ... but you can add metal flake to flat black.

The cars are still prepped like normal, that's why they come out so nice looking.

You won't get the same effect just dancing around the car with a few aerosol cans of tremclad.

I've had the hood on my Charger painted flat black for a few years now, no signs of anything peeling or rusting or anything

Once my internet stops being unreasonable I'll post a pic

Hehe... I had a 74 Charger I spray-bombed flat black and got a set of cheap-o chrome Keystone wheels for it. All I can say is that sucker looked MEAN. I really needed a couple more coats on it, but I'd say it turned out pretty good for a $50 paint job in my garage that took about 3-4 hours. And if anything ever did happen, just go buy another $4.99 can of paint!!!

:headbang:

Man I miss that car... Only car I ever got rid of that I want back...

Yeah im planning the flat black look for my car but i have some professional painting gear and my dads steady arm to do it. So it wont be three shades of red and a balding racing stripe no more.

Plus i already painted my spoiler flat black. No prep or nothing with a rattle can and it has got to be the easiest color to paint with. It is really hard to see paint defects cause the whole job already looks like on to begin with since its flat.

I've been thinking about it for awhile, but after reading that article there is no doubt. The car needs body work here and there, and sucking it up for a professional job, learning to do it myself with all the right gear, or trying to match touch-up areas is too much of a pain in the ass (and $) so the car is going to flat black. Plus, it looks pretty good, and any rims can be painted bronze or whatever matching color suits (too cheap right now to go aftermarket).

Heh, 74 ... the big uns

318, 400?

that was done in about 10 minutes. Without getting into the story, save to say that at 110 MPH hood pins can tear right through your rad support.

Being sans hood, my buddy had a spare blue one,

so since blue + green = ew

this is my brother's car, we did the flat black the right way.

You gotta work fast with flat black if you're using an aerosol can.

If you are using a gravity gun, you can add some reducer to flat black to get it to lay a bit thinner.

oh god....heres the new trend i can see it...all the honda boys and eveyone is gonna have a flat black car...i have a flat black fender and bumper on my s13 only cause it crashed it and i want it to somewhat match my old black paint job...better then driving around with a gold bumper and blue fender!

project200sxdate not saved · #14

my car is flat black its a pain when it gets reallt dirty/oily cause it will not come off and if it is oil you cant just paint over it you have to sand it out.. but other than that it looks good and for like a $20 paint job im happy my rims are black as well as my windows tinted like 15% so its allll black then with the chrome trim.. it looks killer. :mike: Thats my 2 cents!

Heh, 74 ... the big uns

It was a 318 with a intake off a 340 and an Edelbrock 600 (bought it that way). He had the exhaust running into ONE chamber flowmasters, and then out either side (kind of AAR Cuda style). Looked good, sounded downright nasty. A little too loud for my taste.

Never really had a chance to mess with it a lot, but I was planning on making it a good handling boat. Kind of pro-touring style, but this was before pro-touring hit the big-time...

Anyway, I need to stop talking about it, it's making me miss it again... :(

Hey you gotta tell me how your car comes out. Im looking to find a turbo hood in a junk yard and a few touch ups of bondo and i want to paint it a flat black. If you end up doing it post up some pictures please.

I think satin black would be better, although you can use the terms "satin" and "flat" the same way, I think with satin black, they put some clear on it so it is smooth and not porous... But I'm not a paint/ cosmetics expert, so what the hell do I know... FLAT BLACK is KICK ASS!!!!
