Does anyone know for sure what kind of metal was used for the VG30E's crankshaft in 1987?
Some might recall the thread I posted about six months to a year ago regarding the JB Weld repair of the keyway on my crankshaft. Well, as expected, it finally failed.
The naysayers out there will say, "I told you so". But I contend that it held up to its end of the bargain very well, especially in light of the way I drive. I am very hard on cars, compared to the average driver. I launch hard often, which I suspect is why it went bad in the first place.
I would have not been surprised if the repair did not last a full weekend. But it, in fact, lasted about a year. Not bad for a hack job, I say.
But the time has come to do it right (short of swapping out the crank). I will need to have the gouged-out area of the crank built up with a bead of material via the welder. And I'll probably have the woodruff key welded in place and file away the excess slag so the pulley fits snug. (I'm tempted to weld the pulley in place if I can find a pulley from a supercharged 3.3 engine)
Anyway, not just any old welder can weld on cast iron. So I need to know the material before I tow the car to a welding shop. Does anyone have this information? Thanks in advance.
