i was searching the internet and came across this on NissanForums.com

A low buck motor would be to use Q45 VH45 pistons in a VG33E blockwhich gives about 9.7:1 compression up from 8.8:1 and are 88mm bore for 3.4 liters. Do a little pocket and match porting, use JWT cams and run SLR or Doug Thorley Headers, top off with a JWT ECU. Run a 2.5" mandrel bent exhaust with peforated core straight through mufflers. Use JWT's POP charger filter replacing the rubber zip pipe with a smooth mandrel bent piece and makes a cold air dam in the engine compartment. This gives just under 260 hp.

For towing it might be better to run Nissan Motorsports 262 cams and give up a few top end hp to get better midrange torque.

Basicaly you want to put a VG30 crank, oil pump and front pulley in a VG33 motor. This is so your accesory drives stay the same because the nose of a VG30 crank is smaller and the pulley diameter and offset is way different.

The real trick setup is to machine down the VG33 nose slightly and bore up the VG30 pulley slightly so you gain the advantages of a bigger nose (the VG30 tended to bend if you went off on it to much) A lot of the class 7 off road racing guys do this but this is getting minorly esoteric.

Even quick and dirty with no headwork and the 262 cams the hybrid VG makes over 220 hp and nearly 250 ft lbs of torque. Running with 87 octane is borderline so you probably have to tow running 92 but you can run around normaly on 87. That power is in the leage of a 5.0 liter ford or the 4.6 modular motor found on 1/2 ton trucks.

You can follow my bulid up. Nissan motorsports or JWT cam, DPR headwork, Q45 pistons, 300ZX rods and crank. Doug thortly headers, JWT ECU , Borla exhaust. All good for about 250 hp and 260 ft lbs of torque. As much as many half ton trucks. Stay tuned to NPM for more details.

Mike

I am using a 300ZXTT crank and rods but its not really needed because the VG33E crank and rods are much strong enough for a fully built NA motor. I just happend to have the twin turbo parts lying around.

I am running 1mm OS flat top Q45 pistons with the valve relifes notched for VG valve locations. This gives 3400cc and 9.8:1 compression.

For Stock VG33 rods you have to have the pin bushing honed out for the Q's larger piston pins. Shoot for 0.0001-0.0003" clearance.

I have a mildly ported DPR cylinder head, Nissan Motorsports cams (JWT has more power, Nissan Motorpsorts has more torque) JWT POP charger, JWT ECU, Doug Thorly Headers, nissan motorsports exhaust.

anyways.. you can find the rest of the info here.. http://www.nissanforums.com/showthread.php?t=35288&page=3&pp=15
its scattered around on pages 3-6

well yeah, i realize that,.. but i was actually just trying to get you guy's opinions on this,.. like if this would be worth it or what.. i mean since this would be something different, ya know? so i'm jus tryin to throw out some stuff i find (not trying to take credit for it)

Ok Guy's This is my first time on the Club S12 forum, but i've been following allong for some time now. First of all this sounds like a bitchin way to build up a radical VG engine. My buddy and I converted a 88 300Z 2+2 to 300ZR specs with the exception of using a VG33 block as a starting point. As you may know the JDM 300ZR used the VG30det engine with unique intake and exahust manifolds. His new exotic killer is now running a T3/T4 hybrid turbo, custom intercooler, AEM stand alone engine management and well the list goes on and on. You get the idea. Needless to say she puts down 620hp and 645 lb/ft of torque to the wheels. All hail the glory of stand alone engine management. Unfortunately this engine will not fit in the S12 but a similar VG33et buildup might just produce numbers close to this with the right components and tuning. I'm thinking of doing just that. What do you guy's think?

vg30e_x2_200sxdate not saved · #7

well someone has already put a VG30DETT in an S-12.

Check out this thread.

Oh and deffinatly go for it.

I don't know, I still want to cram the VQ35, or the VG33ER into my S12...it would be so cool...;) 8)

Sorry Randy I hadn't caught that thread when I wrote in last time. Last time I was looking the consensus was that the VG30dett would not fit. I gladly stand corrected. That must be one sweet ride. So how hard are the RB engines to install in a S12? Considering the robustness of that engine it seems like if the install wasn't too difficult that you might have a real giant killer on your hands. Granted RB engines aren't cheap but damn 350-400hp is easilly acomplished with nothing but bolt-on's.

vg30e_x2_200sxdate not saved · #10

no oppology needed. I figured you had not seen the old board so I just figured I'd point you in the right dirrection ;).

As far as the RB fitting I have heard that the length may be an issure or even the exhause routing on left hand drive cars.

Spooleddate not saved · #11

I think it would be very interesting to see. For the money you would be putting into that, however, you could probably get your hands on a VQ35 out of a 350Z or Infiniti G35 with 287hp stock. I've haven't gotten the chance to measure up a VQ35 to see what the chances are of fitting in the S12, but that would be a heck of an upgrade either way!

capitalkingdate not saved · #12

what about the valvetrain? i'm seriously considering that all motor build up at the top. granted, valve work can always be a good thing, if you dont address the valves immediatly after the cylinder build up, and the cams,.....

Alex Frostdate not saved · #13

I have taken a rough measurement...The VG33ER should fit horizontally, and front to back, but would stick out of the hood by about 2-3 inches. The VQ will barely fit side to side, front to back is the same as the VG, and depth is a possibility...within an inch or so...8) The VG33E should fit perfectly!!! Hope this helps...8)

capitalkingdate not saved · #14

two quick questions...whats the "r" stand for, and is there any difference in length as far as the vg30, vg33, vg30dett?

hengedate not saved · #15

the R means its supercharged.. still dont know why nissan used an R for supercharged.. but oh well

vg30e_x2_200sxdate not saved · #16

don't they use a roots supercharger?

hengedate not saved · #17

don't they use a roots supercharger?
well damn.. you're right.. i guess i never really thought of it like that

Alex Frostdate not saved · #18

Neither did I...I guess it wasn't a typo or anything...8)

As far as the length of the blocks goes, I believe they are based roughly off the same block, so the all the VG's should be about the same length...8)

Spooleddate not saved · #19

Yep, this is true. All VG series motors are the same length. It's the width that varies. And that's only between the single and dual overhead cam motors. The VG33 motor is the same size as the VG30, externally, at least. lol

capitalkingdate not saved · #20

i'm sorry, i just realized i left out part of my question. rod length (head outta tha gutter) the connecting rods in these engines, is there a difference in length? the prime counterpart for the q45 pistons would be vg33 rods, correct? (i think thats what i read) and obviously, this setup would create more compression so forced induction wouldnt be the best idea. oh well, i suppose thats why they make nos.

capitalkingdate not saved · #21

anyone? something? maybe?

FinalRightsdate not saved · #22

I come from the Z31 world bearing gifts of our cheap custom parts. :D One thing I haven't seen anyone discuss yet is the pathfinder upper intake manifold. I'm pretty sure its gonna be a bit hard to slip under the hood, but its well worth it with the gains. The stock Vg30e upper intake is a very bad design, and probably the most restrictive part of the intake. The Pathfinder intake has long runners that let the engine breath more easily. Have you guys looked into the euro cams? Those are good for a bit of a horsepower increase. There are guys building all kinds of custom parts for the Vg30e/t over on z31.com. Most of the parts are mainly for the vg30et,but others can be adapted. I'm not sure how well it would work, but there is a company that makes a kit to fit the pathfinder intake in the Z31 engine bay with no problems(consist of intake, mount, valve cover,etc.). I think if you through the the pathfinder intake on this hybrid vg33e,you can probably make 260hp. Without the intake,I don't think it can breath enough to make it.

Blinocac200sxdate not saved · #23

The problem I find is he says something about an 88mm bore for making a VG33 a 3.4. a VG33 is a ~91mm bore. so decreasing the bore size would yeild a smaller motor, 3031cc's to be precise.

hengedate not saved · #24

so then just use the VG30 block? i mean i dont know what all he wrote is right or not.. i just found it interesting.. so i just straight up copied and pasted it here..

Blinocac200sxdate not saved · #25

Yep. Shoot you can bore a VG30 out to the same as a VG33. Thats what I did.

FinalRightsdate not saved · #26

It's eaiser to use the Vg33 block,as it has thicker walls then the stock vg30.

Blinocac200sxdate not saved · #27

Umm, sorry, but theres no real difference in the thickness of the cylinder walls. There is a minor difference in the placement of one of the water passages, but it's close enough that you can still use a VG33E headgasket on a bored VG30E.

FinalRightsdate not saved · #28

I don't know why I said that. : / I should have remembered from all the post on the Z31 board about the blocks being almost the same. I guess I should get ****tard added to my name. : x

Blinocac200sxdate not saved · #29

Nah, it's ok. There is a vicious rumor that the blocks are radically different. It's possible that it was started by someone who was thinking of the VG30DE and not the VG33E.

Spooleddate not saved · #30

Is this regarding the early or late VG30E? I know the water passages are different between the later W series VG30E in the 88 200SX SE V6 compared to the early VG30E in the 87 200SX SE V6. (Z31's had the changeover in the 86-87 model year, as opposed to the S12 that had it in the 87-88 model year). I'm assuming this refers to the later W series VG30E since there would be no reason to move backwards with the VG33. Any thoughts on how the water passages would line up for the early VG30E?

FinalRightsdate not saved · #31

I thought the only diffrence between the normal vg30e and the W series was extra water passages in the heads?

Spooleddate not saved · #32

Possibly, but I'm not exactly sure. The shape and location of the passages may have changed, but I have nothing to compare it to.

Hey I was bored, Theres only so much you can do while waiting on a flywheel with an imobile car sitting on your lift......

I don't know, I still want to cram the VQ35, or the VG33ER into my S12...it would be so cool...;) 8)

The VG33ER has been done with an upgraded Kennebelle 12 Psi pulley, Isky cams, headers, and an adapted Frontier Nismo CAI, oh and 3" exhaust, made like 310 HP....much more than a VG30E with bolt-ons (as said in the beggining of this thread 260HP) But it prolly cost twice as much......

The VG33ER is only good stock at the crank for 210 HP....I know its quite a bit more than the VG30E but the better option ( and I know from personal exp.) that the VG30ET will make more power moddified (cheaper and easier to up the boost)
