340 bucks just for the scoop? These turbo hood prices are getting way outta control. It makes paying 150 for a pair of Mk2 mudflaps seem reasonable.

PrinceMar 15, 2013, 10:09 pm · #3

It's just a start. Make an offer if you don't like my price

Lol whole hoods go for 300+ you might want to come down a bit....

Yeah from what I understand the turbo hood has a different under skeleton so just cutting a hole in an Mk1 hood is hardly ideal. And good luck finding a turbo hood missing the scoop, that is about the equivalent of finding a needle in a haystack. Why the seller is convinced just the scoop is worth more then what reasonable priced complete turbo hoods sell for is beyond me.

100 bux IMO is indeed a serious offer. He's right, the underside of the scooped hood has a reinforced skeleton to keep the hood scoop from bobbing up and down with the weight:

Turbo hood does indeed have a special cut out, and the reinforcement skeleton is very different than that of a flat Mark II hood. This is why guys who have cut a hole on a Mark I flat hood and slapped on a turbo bulge have complained about the hood wobbling up and down... the Mark I flat hood support skeleton wasn't designed with the extra weight of the also-skeletoned hood scoop in mind. This is also why that guy making the fiberglass turbo bulges has something good goin' on there, because a lightweight copy won't be a problem for a cut-open Mark I flat hood.

Can you cut open a flat hood and bolt this onto it? Sure. You can reinforce it with some welding work and some rebar perhaps. But it's gonna be a pain in the ass. So yes, 100 bux + shipping is a reasonable offer because as it is the shipping is going to hurt.

To add to the,  "turbo scoop to flat hood"  theorizing,  I thought that the technique would be to drill holes into the flat hood and only remove the reinforcement behind it that blocks you from getting to the bolts on the other side.  As opposed to cutting a hole into the hood.

ArroMar 18, 2013, 1:21 am · #12

No, the point of the scoop is the additional clearance it gives you for engines that need it such as a KA24DE.

Jeremy AMar 18, 2013, 1:31 am · #13

No,  the point of the hood scoop was to make turbo cars look more sporty.  The clearance is a bonus if that's what you want/need.

ArroMar 18, 2013, 1:36 am · #14

No, the point of the hood scoop was because without it, the FJ doesn't clear it. Remember I have an RS-X in my garage. Giving the North American turbo CA18ET cars the scoop was an afterthought for the reasons you stated, bit definitely not the reason why the hood scoop was designed for these cars.

Jeremy AMar 18, 2013, 1:41 am · #15

Touche,  touche.  I forgot about the rs-x FJ cars.  Didn't make that connection.

Shit are you telling me I need a turbo hood when I do my KA24 swap?
I assume the Ka24e would fit just fine. Didn't realize this.

you have nothing to worry aboutthe KA and the SR fit fine under the flat hood.
ArroMar 23, 2013, 2:40 am · #18

That isn't entirely true. If you use custom motor mounts like hockey pucks, the engine sits a bit lower and is fine. Otherwise you have to hammer the underside of the hood a bit where the support skeleton touches the highest front corner of a KA24DE valve cover. You might be able to dremel away some of that skeleton there as an alternative. Be careful tho if you hammer at it, I put a tiny dimple in the top of the hood.

How do I know this is needed? Because I own a KA24DE swapped car and ran with a flat hood before I threw on the turbo hood. And I had to do that. So you have *something* to worry about, it's just something you can solve with a bit of work or if you're willing to deal with fucking ridiculous amounts of vibration that hockey pucks give you.

PrinceMar 24, 2013, 9:20 pm · #19

Still got the turbo hood

sideways_s12Mar 24, 2013, 9:25 pm · #20

Of course you do you want 300 bucks for it lol...

Colonel GustardMar 25, 2013, 12:07 am · #21

I bought my running SE for 100, and 2 other SE's both for under 300. Its ridiculous to pay more than that for a tiny scoop that goes on the hood.

I took the dremel route, it worked great. The hood didn't really seem to lose much of its structural integrity either as I don't notice the hood bobbing in or out on the freeway from wind.

But you just took out a little, right? That's probably why. But the point is, you had to modify the hood to make it work. It doesn't just work as-is ;)

No definitely doesn't just work as is using stock type motor mounts (I used Nismo mounts). Here is a pic from my build thread. Just had to cut out the center brace:
