Helloo,

My name is Sammy & I am the proud new owner of an 87 s12 hatch :D
Automatic, still.. Yes. Stock, still.. Yeah.. But for $500 cash.. & everything working juust great.. (except for the spedometer, but pshh) well, I'm not complaining! Especially after I realized how difficult these little cars can be to find. Thank youu, Spokane Craigslist! Haha.
Even stock & auto, after owning it for just a month now, he still amazes me. Yeah, he has a name too... Tom. Tom teh 12 :P
Tom towed a 95 240 uphill & across town one icy January night, like a boss. Okay, with the help of some super grippy snow tires that came with the car & the 14 no longer having an SR in it, but still...
& speaking of the snow tires, I wish it would snow around here again! The 12 was a freakin blast. Incredible how it would just slide around a corner all nice & go back to being in a perfect straight line... Just. Like. That.
Sorry, I'm rambling now.. You guys all probably know how awesome & badass these cars are, duuh... Haha.. I'm just hyped on drifting now that I finally own my own sweet lil rwd car. Wish I started off as a Nissan girl & not one drivin Jettas! Sigh...  :cantlook:
Anyway, hope to make some chill friends on the forum & help each other out along the way achieving similar, but different car goals. :)
Oh, & I'm goin to school for auto body & paint, so once I get my certificate, hopefully I'll be painting some minty 12s in the NW. Yeahh!

I'll post pics when mine isn't so... stock lol. At least not ride height! Its a lil funny car for the time being but not sure if it'll snow again, hope so >:)
Kay, maybe just one pic for now.

sammyys_s12xXFeb 18, 2013, 8:20 pm · #23

5 speed swap, lowered, s13 front suspension, then a ca18 one sweet day.

ArroFeb 18, 2013, 8:25 pm · #24

S13 front suspension? What exactly are you referring to? As in S13 coilovers?

I take it you mean CA18DET, which is a nice engine, although I personally am not a fan of the wonky wiring (especially the crazy ignition with its complications). But it does look nice in the S12 and from a purist point of view, it works (S12 Mark II Silvia RS-X had CA18DET, after all).

You might have trouble finding a Mark II S12 5-speed manual trans. They're harder and harder to find. If you're planning on going CA18DET, it'll probably come with the trans. There's your five speed manual trans.

sammyys_s12xXFeb 18, 2013, 8:50 pm · #25

I'm getting the 5 speed swap that came out of a parts s12 for $250. & honestly I don't really know what the hell i'm talking about right now, my mind is somewhere else at the moment. What kind of engine do you prefer? I really like SR's too.

You need to read this:

S12 Swap Guide

And you need to know what year the manual trans is out of, Mark I and Mark II have different mounting issues, and if the donor car is 1984-86 you might have some trouble.

Personally, I think CA18DET, SR20DET, and KA24DE are all great engines with strengths and weaknesses, but I think the KA24DE wins for me because they're cheaper and easier to maintain. And can still be boosted later for peanuts.
rifelman1993Feb 19, 2013, 1:28 am · #32

Soon I plan on starting a 350hp+ ka24et ka is best road to go one cheaper. 2 easy to work on. 3 parts are a easy find. And The only thing a sr is better at is higher rpm but a Ka if built right can have a higher rpm. And still waiting on yours pics lol  :

ArroFeb 19, 2013, 2:02 am · #33

A "350hp+" KA is a serious build, and will require beefier than stock internals, lower compression pistons, and a lot of time and money to tune (not to mention a lot of money on parts), so I would never consider it "cheaper". On the other hand, an SR20DET is boosted from the beginning, and the computer is already designed to manage boost; tuning it for 300 hp is feasible if you're careful, and has been done before a number of times on a stock longblock. Also, SR has a much more square rod to length ratio compared to the KA.

I'm not putting down the KA. I'm just saying that it sounds like you don't really understand what's involved in making a KA24E or DE into a serious beast. I spent enough time on ka-t.org to know better.

Start off with a KA swap. Boost it mildly. Then when you want more, yank the engine, build the internals, put on a bigger turbo... because by then you'll already have a good understanding and most of the tuning tools to adapt it to more power.

rifelman1993Feb 20, 2013, 9:23 am · #34

Lol trust me I do understand I have built a lot of motors on cars to rare for people to even know of. I might be young but when I comes to cars very few people will prove me wrong. But a good sr nor a shitty one. Will cost you 2500 to 3000. A ka24e 100 lol. I can take that 2400 and build my ka from the inside out. With my build when im done I plan on being 4500 to 6000 into just the motor. I know it takes a lot to keep up on a motor pushing 350hp but it is my drift slut and weekend driver lol. I hope to buy a notch here soon for a nice clean DD. wanna do a 200hp ca18DET.

Could I throw a v8 in my 12? Would that even work? Lol

Brandon GFeb 21, 2013, 12:10 am · #37

It could work, you may/may not have to cut up your strut towers by your inner fenders though. And you'd need MUCH stronger crossmember, not sure where you'd find one of those, would probably have to be custom. Anyways I'm currently in the process of my S13 coilover swap, let me know if you have any questions, I might be able to answer, though I'm still a newbie myself

turbo-s12Feb 21, 2013, 12:13 am · #38

Do you guys not read on here? there are a few cars getting v8s now and a couple have already been done...dont really need to touch the crossmember or strut towers either

rifelman1993Feb 21, 2013, 2:33 am · #39

Lol ya there are a few builds on here with v8 motors.  And our bay is the same as a 240 so whatever they can do so can we.

sammyys_s12xXFeb 21, 2013, 8:12 am · #40

Thank you for simply answering my question :) all I wanted to know

sideways_s12Feb 21, 2013, 11:02 am · #41

welcome and v8 would be tits if you have the means to do so...but I'd go with a ca18det if you plan to stick with the 4cyl I have one and it's alot of fun....

ArroFeb 21, 2013, 11:37 am · #42

Our bay isn't exactly the same as a 240SX, the S13 is a bit longer. But yeah otherwise they're close.

BUT... we who have been here longer than a couple of years have heard people claim they knew what they were doing, that they would build a 300 hp this or that, that they would make a turbo KA monster, or a V8 swap would get done... and to tell you the truth, 99% of the time those projects never get completed. On rare occasions, someone gets an engine fired up, but it's either untuned or the rest of the supporting changes needed to drive the car properly aren't ever completed.

So a lot of this shit is a pipe dream. It really doesn't matter how many projects are "currently in progress" if nothing usually gets finished. Do you want to eternally work on your car in a garage, or do you want to at some *reasonable* point in the future do you want to DRIVE it??? If you want to be realistic, read the swap guide and think about how much you can afford to spend, how skillful you or a close (and WILLING) friend is, and what you really want from your S12.

Anything lacking those processes to a decision is IMO just plain dumb. No offense to anyone, it's a generalized statement. But I stand by it, and I think most of the veteran members here will stand behind me on that.

sideways_s12Feb 21, 2013, 11:42 am · #43

I do agree. But we do have a memeber that is on par with finishing a 1uz swap...so we will see, he will probably be the first to have a running driving v8 powered s12 that is if in fact he finishes it lol. We don't hold our breathe around here for people to finish big swaps like that lol

Brandon GFeb 21, 2013, 10:47 pm · #44

I'd find it very hard to believe that anyone with a V8 swap didn't have to upgrade from a 4 cyl rated crossmember, But that's just me.

turbo-s12Feb 21, 2013, 10:52 pm · #45

I saw a running sbc in an s12 in canada many years ago...and theres a guy with a superchargeed 1uz on here that finished it

and 240 guys use the stock xmember which is for 4 cyl
sammyys_s12xXFeb 22, 2013, 2:06 am · #46

Okay Arro, I get what youre saying. I was rather just curious if people did that, or could do that, to their s12's. I think I'll end up with a KA-T in mine after my bestest friend puts an RB in this s14. But for now, I just want to drive it! Nothin too crazy. I feel like I'm going to lose my mind while the car is getting the 5 speed swap done one weekend, lol.   :shifty:

silvertonFeb 22, 2013, 2:33 am · #47

I don't understand the whole deal with the crossmember?  It just ties to two ends of the car together, and most of the time a V8 doesn't weigh much more than a V6.  Only problem with putting a VG in a CA equipped car is the oil pan, that's the only thing that's different between the two.  Nothing structural.  the 1UZ is all aluminum, and probably weighs the same as a VG-E, maybe even less!

If I were you OP, I'd put an SR under the hood.  Everyone and their mom has a KA(T).  The SR is a badass all aluminum fucking RACE engine built right from the factory of those snazzy Japanese people at Nissan.

Brandon GFeb 22, 2013, 11:40 am · #48

I don't see a problem with a v6 crossmember being used for a v8, as like you said, there's not too much of a weight difference, what i'm saying was that I don't think that a crossmember out of a 4 cylinder would be able to handle a v8 due to all the power. I'm not saying it can't happen, I just don't think it's a good idea. If anyone wants to prove me wrong, I fully support it.

ArroFeb 22, 2013, 8:08 pm · #49

SR is a good choice but for different reasons. I just like that it comes with a turbo-friendly computer from the get-go. No need to tune for awhile.

When there is a V8-swapped S12, driven regularly on the streets, with a hood that fits or some kind of proper hood bulge to enclose it so cops won't pull you over, then we can consider it a reality. Like I said before, firing one up in an S12 isn't the same as "It's ready, and I just drove it to the beach/burger joint/family reunion.

The crossmember does more than just hold an engine, from what I can see it's a structural reinforcement... a major one, I might add. But as far as the engine goes, it's the mounts that need to be modified, not the crossmember. Strength isn't an issue.

sideways_s12Feb 24, 2013, 11:50 pm · #50

well in vegas you can drive around with no hood without being pulled over lol....I wouldn't reccomend it for fear of people fucking with your shit but I see it all the time....
