250's are pretty small for the freeway or an all around bike in general. They are better suited for in town riding or two lane 45 to 55 mph back road highways with minimal traffic at most. If your spending 200 bucks a month on gas driving your SE I'd imagine your doing a fair amount of freeway driving. Everyone freaks out at people getting bigger bikes (generally 600cc's and up) as first bikes but motorcycles are like guns. If your an idiot with a gun someone is a lot more likely to get hurt or killed. If your an idiot on a motorcycle someone (probably the idiot riding it) is a lot more likely to get hurt or killed. Responsible riders already have it hard enough looking out for cars that are not paying attention. Put an irresponsible rider on any bike and their chances of getting hurt or killed are going to be much higher regardless of what they are riding.
If your going to be doing even 30 to 40 percent of your commuting on the freeway the smaller displacement bikes are not good choices. They are usually lighter weight and tend to get blown around by the wind or larger passing vehicles at freeway speeds (which obviously can be pretty dangerous) and struggle to keep up at freeway speeds because they are so underpowered. My VFR 750 is 500lbs and is a sport touring bike and I still get blown around on the freeway a good amount on windier days. If your looking at the Ninja's I'd be looking at the Ninja 500 at the minimum if not something a bit bigger. The Ninja 650r is a great entry level bike as well but are more expensive then the Ninja 500's. Personally I feel the best all around entry level street bikes are the ninja 650r, sv 650, ninja 500, gs 500 or gs 500f. All have at least decent handling, braking, acceleration and curb weights and can be had for a variety of prices.
Mad Max is the man........as Redneck said really look at what type of riding you are doing if your time will be spent at highway speeds do not go with a 250 a 600 would be the smallest also take riding classes they do help

Actually you do. Ever try and kick a bike with a dead battery? I have and I can tell you...it aint fun. And you have the added headache of dealing with points.
Kick-starting a bike with a totally dead battery is like pop-starting a car with a totally dead battery. It ain't happening.
i had to push my friend on his honda 600 across a parking lot for like a half hour as he tried to kick start it , because he left the ignition on and the battery died, not fun
oh well i dont really care lol im in walking distance of a parts store so whatevs. actually 3 and my neighbor has a jump box its all good guys
I have an idea: Keep your vehicle properly maintained, including a functioning battery.
