I have been a veterinarian now for 25 years, probably won't retire for at least another 25 lol. Small animal medicine, primarily dogs & cats. Worked for a practice for 10 years, bought my own and later built a new physical plant in 2000.

I've been in residential construction since I was a teenager, going on 11 years now. Doing most of my work as a general contractor these days, but seriously considering getting into building inspection and code enforcement.

I work in heavy fab... I'm a: machinist, welder, fabricator, cnc programmer/operator,  water jet mechanic, and head of assembly.
We mainly built water treatment equipment, clarifiers, thickeners, degritting operations, aerators, and anything in between. We also build filter presses for water processing and mining applications.

We're  job shop, so we get odd jobs too.

I live with my parents, and make what little money I can, buying and selling various things. I'm a student and there aren't any jobs around me. Beg borrow and steal your way through school, that's what my cousin taught me.

You guys make me feel like a bum.

Full time student. Haven't had a job in four years. I make my money selling E30 parts to go to school. Buying a house with the profits. 30% down FTW!

@Schizo, he's right. Take advantage of the loans/grants/scholarships and whatever you can get out of your parents now. Its so much harder to go to school later.

@ Rednucleus, Is it true what they say about veterinarians spending more time in school than MDs?

No, about the same, and we don't have to do the extended internships MD's do. On average 4 yrs college then 4 years vet school - more than enough for me!

I am working at about 40 plants at this time. Anything you building being shipped to Pa, MD,Va because I could get pics for you installed.

I don't tell people I do shit plants because of all the jokes. I just tell people when they ask about the smell I tell them "it smells like money to me"

I work in IT for one of the major midwest hospital sffiliate systems.  We've got affiliate hospitals in both Iowa and IL.  Tier one support level right now, I've got my degree in programming though, so I'm constantly looking for new opportunities.

We run all the EMR systems, hardware leasing, HR services, and all programs and servers for all of our affiliate hospitals.

To that end, I'm applying for Disability next month. I'm disabled (always have been) and this buy-and-sell thing isn't making enough money to keep me on the road. I figure I'll end up repaying it all through the social security tax when I get a real job and start a career, and let's be honest: It won't be around for me to retire on. Next semester should go a lot more smoothly if I can get on disability. Won't have to worry about balancing school money and car money so much.

I changed my mind. My occupation is full-time student, not bum-in-dad's-house. :P

I've been working industrial construction the last little bit in the oil field. I've been doing my welding apprenticeship right now, but I'm quitting and continuing on with my automotive apprenticeship, which I also get to deal with high performance stuff.
Not to mention I'm not a big fan of being away from home for 2 weeks straight for work

Damn all you guys do cool, epic manly stuff...

I go to school part time, I'm a free-lance digital artist (i.e website graphics, logos, t-shirt designs, etc etc etc), and I do automotive repair on the side for friends who don't want to go to shops (my dad has been a nissan master tech since the 70s, all kinds of certs, taught me all I know). I'm also a photographer for hire, a decent cartoonist, a would-be novelist and avid writer, a vocalist in a small acoustic set, and paid to be a social media and advertisement specialist at a locally owned business.

all my stuff sounds so powderpuff next to you guys haha

ProlowtoneJun 23, 2012, 5:37 am · #21

^ that stuff is pretty cool to, I tried website graphics....... Failed miserably but i did manage to make a Custom background for my Gaia online account years back while randomly fucking with codes.. :P.

I was practically born at the local drag strip and oval track in Sydney Nova Scotia so i am naturally a bit of a motor head. I Spent all of high school in advanced metal fab and the automotive shop, If the teachers wanted something made or fixed they went to me. I was entered into an Automotive Apprenticeship without my knowledge and the teachers sent me off for an interview and i Aced it as i usually seem to do. Got my letter off acceptance a few days later and was told i am one of the most prommising that they have had for the program in awhile, But i got screwed out of it in the end due to the school district fucking up my courses  I dropped out after that.

I am now taking every chance i get to further my knowledge of the automotive industry and advancing the skill set that i have. I was working in the oil patch for 18 an hour at 13-16 hour shifts as a welders helper (Apprentice), 24 days on and 4 off (2 spent driving to and from camp to home).  I am now working as a production welder. I make shelving, Signs, grocery carts, Luggage carts and anything else that is needed by stores and airports across Canada. Interesting job but at times it is so god damn repetitive

Getting trucks stuck on site all day before dragging them across the site with the side boom is too common
Genie lift is stuck and im covered in mud from dragging welding cables all day

Full time student, but got a paid internship contract signed with MAN Diesel & Turbo. They make the biggest diesel engines in the world - primarily used for container ships. 110.000 Horsepower two-stroke monsters. Engines are physically made in China, Korea and Japan, but the design is made in Denmark.

My job will be to implement component standards into the CAD system for the engine constructors, so they can easily find the standard parts necessary for the drawing.

That's right, mechanical engineering. I can greatly recommend it, as it covers a lot of areas. Construction and production of almost anything physical made of steel, polymer or ceramic, material science, marine, power plants, windmills and other sustainable energy sources.

^^^ Now that is a profession I never considered...
I am an aircraft quality assurance inspector by day, working long term (30+ years) on a government contract. We deal with single engine Cessnas, turbine helicopters, and turboprop transport aircraft. In my spare time (HA!) I inspect and fix smaller aircraft out there to get some mad money and help out some friends. Nice perks at times when I get rides to the proverbial $100 hamburger fly-ins and all. I have been in aviation all my life, actually born on an Air Force base.

Cutter.  Miami Vice?  Please don't speak for me, because that wasn't my thing.  Plus, freebasing was the "thing" in the 80's.  And a couple hundred dollars?  My, the cost of living was cheap in your town.  The song "Mayor of Simpleton" is not about drugs at all.  But it's not like anybody is trying to get into a pissin contest with you.  Sorry if you misunderstood me or the pics.  The world has come along way since them 80's.

Of course it's all good, braddah.  You woke up!  In the early 80's we never went to sleep (85 hrs was my record, body-weight 108 lbs), I still remember being sent to Emergency and doctor asking me what I had to eat/drink in the last 3 days -- I replied "a plum and two Otter Pops"!  I can laugh now because I don't smoke anything, no alcohol, no drugs and workout 4/5X a week.  Life is Good.

Cutter that is one of the best posts I have read here, LMAO. BTW I hate taking care of guard dogs. 20 yrs ago I took care of some navy dogs and some police dogs - they were all meaner than shit and even their handlers were scared of them. How about I just show up with some really big guns instead of dogs, plus I run a mean bbq. Plus I'm a fast learner, just tell me what to do and I'll take it from there.
