ok so yea im a total noob when it comes to swaps. i basically need to know what i need to get to swap a SR20 into my S12 which currently has a VG30E in it. Since its so hard to find any parts for that engine i figure a swap would be easier if i knew what i needed to do.

"There's no replacement for displacement"

-Ls1 swap it.

silvertonJun 5, 2011, 2:55 pm · #3

vg30's are cake to turbo and can take upwards of 500 hp without any beefing up of the internals.

I'm kind of hard pressed on the issue, but you're better off getting a car that was originally a 4 cylinder, as you'll need the cross member anyway!

But, if you do take the vg out of it, just makes my car all the more rare. :D

Colonel GustardJun 5, 2011, 3:29 pm · #4

Don't swap out the vg or you will be forever gay and hated. Se are too rare t just swap ok the vg. Get a ca car instead and swap that out

VG OR DIE!!!!!

BoostedVGJun 5, 2011, 8:42 pm · #6

Turbo charge the vg. I wouldn't call it easy. I would call it highly rewarding!

Vg's are great when they are fresh. Me and gustard know.
silvertonJun 6, 2011, 6:17 pm · #14

the only reason you swapped out your vg is because it blew, right?

I have a 120,000 mile motor that's had nothing but synthetic since it was new, and it pulls.  pulls damn hard!  There's nothing like the torque of a V6 (well, maybe a V8...).  especially when you're putting out 180tq @ 3k or less.

And like I said, the stock VG will handle 400-500hp without any internal upgrading.

Vg30e SE S12's RULE !!!!!
ka-tgazelleJun 6, 2011, 8:52 pm · #16

SIlverton you should read in to the ka a bit more , its a lower rpm torquey motor , making all its power low end ,  the vg only makes 160 torque.

Colonel GustardJun 6, 2011, 9:31 pm · #17

ummm more than 160tq sir

silvertonJun 6, 2011, 9:41 pm · #18

the KA is a truck motor, through and through.  The VG makes 173-182tq.

KA24DE makes 155hp @ 5400rpm and 160tq @ 4400rpm

VG30E  makes 160hp @ 5200rpm and 174tq @ 4000rpm (the vg s12 version)

They are only .6 liters of displacement apart, so that's why the torque numbers aren't too far off.  To be fair, we should be comparing a vg30de to the ka24de, or the vg30e to the ka24e.  But the vg30 isn't as stressed as the power is spread across two extra cylinders.

All in all, VG > KA.  I'll leave the four cylinders to stripped down model pickups, and hondas.

ka-tgazelleJun 7, 2011, 12:21 am · #20

You can leave them to trucks, japanese engine builders now use them for s14 and s13's .  THats about the only insult you have, forgetting the ka24e was the only motor to come in the trucks......

The only gross sounding vg I've ever heard had 2 dead cylinders and a fart can.  Anyways wasn't MT017 asking about an sr swap?

Colonel Gustard on 03:29:46 PM / 05-Jun-11Swap out the vg and you will be forever loved and revered.

Fixed that for ya

silverton on 09:41:37 PM / 06-Jun-11All in all, VG > KA.  I'll leave the four cylinders to stripped down model pickups, and hondas.

And I'll leave the 20mpg with comparable horsepower to you VG guys.

Stock for stock. KA>VG in every way. similar power. much cheaper. Much more abundant. Easier to work on/replace. newer. list goes on

But wait, we weren't comparing VG to KA were we.

Stock for stock
VG>SR :P

(I just happen to hate the VG a little bit less than the SR)
silvertonJun 7, 2011, 6:20 pm · #39

jay, you just said the vg is better than the ka...

Might be similar horsepower, but the torque numbers are way better.  and I get 20mpg flogging (read: pinned all the time) the shit out of it, and 24mpg doing the speed limit, and 26mpg cruising at 100mph.

ka-tgazelleJun 7, 2011, 8:27 pm · #40

The torque numbers arent "SOOO much better" The ka makes 160 torque and the vg makes what you said 174... thats not huge , let aloen mines turboed now making it 270hp (crank) and around 280 crank torque. But i could careless what other people think of my car its mine  and i love it.

On the other hand i dont like the vg or sr  but I think if you did a rb20 swap  it would be much easier.

And to do a sr swap in to a se is as easy as  having a friend who knows how to weld  make motor mounts.
MT017Jun 8, 2011, 12:56 am · #41

ok well great... if yall know where i can get parts great. links plz. otherwise i need to know what to get for the SR20 swap.

...And I get 25MPG floggin mine.  31MPG at 70MPH highway all day long.  However, my VG is port matched/smoothed, punched .040 over, Cerma Chromed EE headers with 2.5 inch all the way through the CAT and muffler.

I love the meaty sound when accelerating but it does need a small resonator after the CAT to reduce the crackly note when I lift off hard accel.

This thread is full of win lol. Anyway you can get parts for the vg from your local parts store I say if your gonna swap the vg go v8 makes more sense to me than downgrading to a 4 cyl.

seishukuJun 12, 2011, 4:40 pm · #45

I can get some parts from my local parts store... Pretty much everything but the starter and alternator (though the one off a KA can be made to work).

vg all the way dudes!
