My name is Jonathan, i am 18 years old. I have wanted a 200 since my best friend and i picked up a 1986 200sx turbo for $750, his car was ill and it took a turn for the worst when he could not afford it. piston #3 came through the side of the block near the turbo, he could not pay the tow bill so the company kept the car. we had a bunch of new parts on it:(.

I bought my new car yesterday. Its in very good condition on the out side but the inside needs work. My interior is really stained..with some rips... I need new motor mounts to. I am most likely going to get a CA18DET and swap it in at this point and try to get new interior. i got it down from the $700 the guy was selling it for to $500. I have a full garage repair manual to help when its needed but i might try and make some mods, No promises but there are a few things i want to try angel

I will. i am going to do a quick tear through the car and try to rip out the interior and do rust repair and then jump into my motor mounts. my engine looks like its about to run laps under my hood it shakes and twists so much:laugh: after i get that stuff down i might grab some Tokico Blues or something and lower it a bit

Hahaha Thanks.I seen the car and fell in love again. I remembered all the good times in my friends car with one glimpse of it. It needs work but i don't mind putting money into such a great car as the pay off is just to good to resist.

The struts will do the job for now hahahaha i hope... all i am doing right now is lifting up the motor with the hoist to allow me to get new motor mounts in there. The previous owner said that the car was not running well.... i am 90% sure it was because the whole motor was twisting under any stress that was applied when the gears were engaged causing it to be laggy and jerky   yes

how about yourself? ever get another s12?

DerMetzgerOct 15, 2010, 6:47 am · #16

Nah unfortunately... I actually sold my S12 as it sat in my driveway rusting away for so long. Some guys turned it into a track day beast and at least its tearing ass around somewhere instead of rotting.

Still have the S13 though, but I am thinking of  using it as a trade in on a new Genesis. Thinking hard about it.

DerMetzgerOct 15, 2010, 7:05 am · #20

Ahh... I hate ford.

The R-Spec is the best Genesis trim. It has all the track upgrades (Torsen LSD, Brembo Brakes, Suspension) and is lighter than the base, and is super cheap. Only like 23k for it.

DerMetzger on 06:47:59 AM / 15-Oct-10Still have the S13 though, but I am thinking of  using it as a trade in on a new Genesis. Thinking hard about it.

If your s13 is in decent condition overall I would keep it and just upgrade the differential, suspension and engine instead of getting a turbo Genesis. Why? The brand new Genesis will depreciate at least 5-8 grand in the first 3-4 years of ownership. Plus most dealerships are not going to give you a fair market value for your s13 you would be trading in. With that same 5-8 grand lost from deprecation alone invested into your s13 it would walk all over the Genesis (mostly due to the fact the s13 is at least 400 to 500lbs lighter than the Genesis). The only area the Genesis seems to have an advantage on the s13 is the front suspension. But with basic modifications the s13 front suspension can be upgraded to be acceptable. So performance wise your not really gaining much with the Genesis. The biggest advantages the Genesis really has over the s13 is that it is new, more luxurious and has a warranty. Anyway just thought I would share my opinion with you on both cars since you still seem kinda indecisive. Not trying to twist your arm either way but just wanted to give you a fair opinion on both cars.

Just not well Tongue

As for the genesis, I hate one of them with a passion after test driving two of them.
V6>2.0t
The V6 snarls, where the 2.0t kinda.... sucked... It was lackluster, boring, and the turbo just didn't do it at all.
Test it yourself, You'll see.
And then you'll realize, "If I'm going to be spending 33k on a hyundai with a GOOD engine, I might as well just spend 33k on a bog-standard 3-series". Have more HP than the 2.0t, and better fuel economy than BOTH of them, and have a BMW that will be taken care of when you take it back to the dealer.

And then you'll just want to shoot yourself for selling the S13, because it's cheap, and buying a new car isn't.
Note: I would never own a new 3 series... And the genesis just makes zero sense for my lifestyle. I can't agree with either of these cars.
Wow, I'm optimistic today! (No sarcasm)

Cheesy

My advice? Buy an E30, swap in a S50B30, and be happy for the rest of your life, because you only spent 4k on a light ass car with 240hp, gets 32mpg, and is less boxy than sylvester stallone in the 80's

Ive driven both, and still like the R-Spec better. Its not that fast right out the box, but, it shares a bottom end of a 4B11 and takes boost really well. Also, there is NO replacement for a nice loud blowoff valve. Best part is its only 23k

As much as I want another S12, I dont know if I could deal with another one that wasnt mine.

By mine, I mean my old one. It had every option from 84 aside from the "Oh Shit" foot brace.

If I were to get another, I would be very picky about it, and I dont know if I could get one just like I want for the money I have.

Oh yea, got something to talk to you about, check for PM

Looking at motor swaps, motor sizes, specs and needed fab work. Thinking about dropping the CA18Det project swap for a
KA24De-t.

Thinking about buying the motor an taking my time building it up in the garage. Top to bottom rebuild, maybe upgraded cams or something and find a Garret T25 turbo and BOV. Make the mounts I need etc. Get a wiring harness, computer and inter cooler. Then once I have the time and extra cash I will begin the installation.

Think i might have found some headlight replacements. My moms boyfriend has a little pickup truck that he says has a housing for HID bulbs? gonna look into it. I was gonna drill out the 3 prongs on the back of an old light and see if i could make the housing work without making it look to ghetto hahahaha

First off, welcome to the club man!  It seems like this club is getting more and more members faster than before (maybe just noticing because of my on and off activity here haha)  I really like the color you found.  I almost picked up a notch in the same color before my 84 found me (or in other words another member found it for  me  yay!) I really dig it.  A lot of people are going for the ka swap here, personally im going down the path of vg power... BUT the KA makes lots of sense, good torque, decent power, replacement parts can be had at any time and its a fairly easy swap from what Ive heard.  Anyhow, welcome again and GL on the build  yes

ArroOct 17, 2010, 10:22 pm · #36

The nice thing about the KA24DE is just dumping it in gives you a peppy motor with a nice power upgrade, and that means you can take the time to handle everything else... exhaust, suspension, etc. and get it up to shape while not suffering under a wimpy motor. Then when you've done all that, you can collect the manifold, turbo and other associated stuffs, and turbocharge it at your convenience. Whereas starting off with a boosted motor means you're committed to do a lot more to get it running.

Funny, mine is manual everything, auto, with the "oh shitz" foot brace.  Oh its an 84 too.  Just like I tell everyone in the market for a new car, GO S12!  My first baby was destroyed by a 16 yr old bimbo. So I had to just leave her at the autobody shop and walk away.  BUT just like girls, theres always another s12 out there, theres things you like and hate about them but you will always find one that will grow on you Wink

Hahahaha thanks! That's funny my friends were trying to find me one in my area for awhile. My friend with the Ae86 found it and drove me out to see it. As we turned down the road i seen it and i wanted it. when i got there the old owner was pulling chunks of wood and few saws and a router from the hatch. When i seen the interior was beat up i knew that i could give it the attention and care it needs, Not use it like a little storage shack.

Thats true, Im just going to run my motor through the winter while i build up the KA. i was just gonna grab the other stuff as i can get it easily. i have 4 friends that have their own shops so they have alot of spare parts most of the time. They mostly get cars like 240s, 300s,NSK's,S2000's and civics. Wish one of them got a 200 for my to pic apart tho
2toneSilviaOct 18, 2010, 3:41 pm · #40

It really does' depend on what you want to do with the car. As stated, the CA18DET will cost more in the beginning but it is also built for turbo. The KA does' have low compression but will need attention for serious power. My friends KAT has 400whp. It has also been built from the ground up. A simple T25 and low boost should be fun and rebuilding a CLEAN low mileage engine should not be necessary. If you go with a larger turbo in the future, I'd suggest building the engine, otherwise you will be throwing money away. Good Luck!

Jsvob03Oct 26, 2010, 10:44 pm · #43

howdy! Considering a Genesis eh? As was said previously, don't waste your $$ on the 4cyl Turbo. feels weak for 200 hp. the 6psd manual makes it nice, but still just..meh. the V6, makes it a better drive.

One argument could be that you'll modify the "turbo" (boost controllers, exhaust, intake, whatever). There goes the warranty Hyundai does not endorse any performance adders. NONE. So if yo come in wth a CAI, boost controller, and an exhaust..your warranty will go away. Don't buy the turbo and plan to mod it, unless you can afford to pay for all the warranty issues. (which there will be many im sure)

My knowledge is first hand. I work at a fairly big (lots of volume) Hyundai dealer. as was said, drive them both before buying. big difference.

..and welcome back/to the Moderators.
