200sxkitcaroh yeah, any of you cali guys know whereabouts info for carb-legal swapping, hook it up.

Do you not remember that I did all that legwork when I was still contemplating an SRT swap in the Neon? It's pretty straight-forward. They will want to see that all the emissions crap is hooked up and in place. Then it needs to pass a dyno check. Visual check, dyno check... it needs to be looked at by a Cali smog official for the visual inspection. There happens to be one of those at the local college if I'm not mistaken. Start swapping and I'll make a couple calls.

Just make sure you use ALL the S13's crap when you go in. They're smarter nowadays, they know what the S13 came with. Every single line and every piece of engine-related plastic (tubes, whatever) needs to be swapped with the engine. We talked about this before, you have everything so you should be fine. Pick up a NEW cat-con while you're at it, you're gonna want to be clean out the back, and there's no telling if the one on this notch has been replaced. Besides, you'll want to put on better exhaust, anyways, right?
KA + 2.5 = WIN

The smog official will tell you anyways if you're missing anything, and they'll get you on the right path.

I know the basic steps, and yes, the college has a state ref in the auto dept.

more like, whether I do the swap first, then take it to them, or reverse.  paperwork that needs to be done.  info from donor car that is needed.  etc.  just the details.  I have all of the little pieces to make it OEM style complete.

the S13 cat is nearly new, I have the last emissions test for that car (3k mi ago) and it passed ridiculously clean.  I have a new 3 inch as well   Oh yeah!  the cat on the car currently was just replaced as well!  ftw!

I think the guy at the college will help me out.  the car doesn't look all tunerzd out so that will help.

on the towing setup:

1) leave the steering unlocked.  the same forces (caster) that returns the steering wheel when you come out of a turn will keep it going straight and let it work as needed.  its cool watching the car drive itself behind the towing truck.  The system worked flawlessly.  I would verify that the car tracked properly before doing this.

2) you must use the supplemental magnet trailer style lights when doing this.

3) check all local laws to make sure youre legit.  This type of operation draws alot of attention, all the cops I drove past were busy with someone else, or I'm sure I would have gotten pulled over for at least just a check.

4) I think Alex? told me cali law requires if you do this the car that is being towed needs to have full up to date registration if all 4 wheels are on the ground and then probably insurance as well.  your state might vary, but check it out.  no more tickets David!

5) I took a spare bumper and bolted the couplers for the tow bar (thats what the assembly is called) so that way, I just got to the guys house, took off the stock bumper assembly, and bolted in this core, and hooked up and left.  If the front is tweaked from an accident, this will complicate things.

6) The tow bar assembly, safety and light gear probably cost around $200 btw, so figure if its worthwhile to you.

7) The alignment of the tow bar assembly has to be good, and mounting has to be solid, if its gonna work right.  On this thing, the ideal distance between the two connections on the bumper is 33", im at 32.5".  also, its important that with the assembly installed on level ground that the tow bar itself is as close to level as possible to minimize the forces on it, I was out about 1".

8) I gotta say, idk if this would be a good idea to get to and from a track.  A front collision with tires, another car, etc and the tow bar wouldn't work, which would be a bitch.  Rigging it would be rather dangerous, remember, if this thing comes loose, its 2400+lbs of steel flying in whatever direction it may go.  On this setup, there were two sets of chains, heavy grade, to try and keep the car and truck together, even if something failed.  a bit paranoid, but for the little extra cost, it was worth it.

Also David has to keep in mind the possibility of transmission/Differential/axle issues. One of those snaps at the track, Dragging it home would be a very bad idea indeed (Unless you took the driveshaft off in the case of blown trans)

Quick question for all the old cars out I.E. s12 how dod they know what and where the egr shit they have to deal with so many cars some have to slip through the crack no? I know out here the smog guys have no clue what they are looking at I had one guy say I needed a check valve for something that went to the intake and when I asked when he was talking about he couldn't tell me lol
ArroMar 28, 2010, 2:15 am · #6

These aren't just "smog guys" in little booths like you have up in NV, our smog shop guys have to be fully trained in classes, and the smog officials are actual state employees with LOTS more training than just the test-only shops. Believe me, they probably know more about aftermarket tuning than you do  Probably more than most of us on here actually. Cars don't actually "slip through the cracks" when they go to the referee, and for a swap, you have to go to a referee. Even in NV it's the same, I talked on the phone for almost 45 mins with a Nevada smog official in Reno, and he told me all about the training they have. About the only way you can smog a car illegally in either state is to know someone at a test shop, BUT, if your car is required to see an actual smog official, you can't get away with jack.

In either state.

As it turns out, Sterling will have to see a smog official here, but I will also have to see a smog official in NV for the Silvia. I will be fine, because the rules regarding actual JDM cars are very lax in NV. But believe me, if I was to bring an originally Cali-sold car into NV with a swap... it will need to be reviewed, and just like in California, it will have to meet ALL emissions tests for the engine that I swapped INTO the car, as well as retain all the emissions equipment that came with that engine.

sideways_s12Mar 28, 2010, 2:30 am · #7

I actually have to have my 87 inspeceted because it's a cali salvage title. i have never heard of any of the guys that swap here or even have pre swapped cali cars having a problem with it they just went with title in hand and the cali reg or plates to show it's been reg in cali and they inspect the vin make sure they all match and send you on your way. Maybe it's different in reno than vegas but i can't imagine it would be.

Regarding your answer to my post about the smog guys sorry I thiought you were talking about takin it to a smaog guy didn't realize you guys had all that bs to go through I knew you guys were put through the hoops but damn welp I will never live in cali atleast not with a modified car lol

ArroMar 28, 2010, 2:44 am · #8

If you are bringing a Cali car into NV, you are required to have it looked at by a Nevada smog inspector. Now, if he knows his shit and you have a swap from a different kind of car than an S12, he's gonna make sure all the emissions hoses and EGR and such is there, along with the factory intake. If he's not-so-smart, he might not notice.

My biggest suggestion to you is to use as much stuff that came with the swapped engine as possible, including the factory intake parts. Looks more "legit" and will probably make 'em feel more comfortable. I guarantee if you roll your shit in there with, say, a KA24DE with a header, generic ebay chrome intake, and a stripped-down bay, you will phail like Munson did at bowling.

I found out everything I did for just this situation -- My car would be a California S12 with a different engine (one from an S14 in my case), being brought to NV for first-time State registration. If you don't believe me, just ask the DMV there. Or better yet, call the Smog Lab because they are the ones who will be looking your car over, not the chick at the counter.

David BMar 28, 2010, 3:07 am · #9

i feel sorry for you guys

your laws kinda suck in that area.

soon there gonna be doing on site fuel/air ratio testing to see if your polluting too much fuel lol

ArroMar 28, 2010, 3:14 am · #10

They already do. The California Highway Patrol will often set up stops along highways, and they check for license and registration, but if they want, they can ask you to pull to the side, and they have a mobile test lab there that can check your shit on the spot.

But for me, any car I have that will be modified will be NV. "Here's my NV license and NV registration, now I will be on my way, thanks officer."

Phuckers. They can kiss my ass.

IggyEGuanaMar 28, 2010, 3:45 am · #11

and all of that can be bypassed with such ease

Well when i plan on gettin it running it will be stock witht he xcetion of the ic and the manifold everything else will be hooked up still then once it's passed I will go to town on it
200sxkitcarMar 28, 2010, 4:54 am · #13

not to confuse anyone, i could do this swap and just drive it, but i wish to make it legal, as its easy and I have all the parts for it.  that way any roadblock Im not going to be concerned as the car will pass fine.  the single cam ka will pass sniffer no problem, its the fact its swapped that would be an issue, but not if I do it legal.

engine is about ready to come out!

Manifold and IC might pass by the local smog booth guys, but it prolly won't fly with the NV smog lab inspectors. Save yourself the grief and throw on the cast mani and stock intake tubing. It's not hard to put back.

Wait... you're going to be modifying a Cali car? Leave it BONE STOCK and do your mods afterwards, only a fool modifies a car BEFORE an inspection. Again, save yourself the grief.

200sxkitcarengine is about ready to come out!

mmmmmm rapage

We need to get drunk and dance around the engine when it's sitting on the driveway lol

somebody here is confused.  not sure if its me.  jasons new car is from cali with a salvage title and a swap.  soooo to reg here he needs insurance (normal), smog(normal), vin check(out of state car), and safety inspection(salvage title).  when my car was vin checked I had the swap already done but they didnt even pop my hood.  the saftey inspection is basiclly just checking all ur lights and ur brakes.  and smog is easily taken care of

sideways_s12Mar 29, 2010, 1:19 am · #16

Thank you lol

Arro I wasn't going to modding the car before inspection I said after inspection I was gonna go to town on it lol

silvia love on 03:01:28 PM / 30-Jul-11yes but the m30 units have hat style rotors! z31's are like the s12's where you have to disasemble the hub to change rotors. with the m30's you can upgrade to z32 rotors and calipers!

omg...that is such a better design...anyone who has had to do the front wheel bearings on an s12 would have to agree...
David BAug 19, 2011, 5:11 am · #22

when i registerd my dd 240 i checked the box that said "is this car garaged elsewhere.... if so then where?" and i put a emissions exempt city on there.. made the registration 2 bux cheaper or something. yay for the commonwealth?

kyskaterAug 29, 2011, 12:14 am · #23

more than stock, no, I don't think so.

16k mi in the last 6 months.  needs exhaust before I sell the house

Wheel bearings are done too, results in steering wheel shake at higher speeds depending on road conditions.  I just keep tightening the spindle nuts lolol

RoofJan 29, 2012, 6:12 pm · #25

I use to get wheel shake in my car before I replaced my tie rod ends.  Maybe its got something to do with that.  Nice car though lookin good :D

JayJan 29, 2012, 6:14 pm · #26

You ARE alive!

200sxkitcarJan 30, 2012, 4:33 pm · #27

lol

tie rods are new but you would be correct thats common.  I know now its the bearings, because when i tighten the spindle nut, it goes away for awhile.

S13 bearings are beefier I think and are all one sealed unit, so I may re-convert to my s13 front setup again.  dunno.  ok for now
