Gdt Thread In Coffee Shop.

I want to know if you think it would be a good idea to have a single thread, called the GDT or General Discussion Thread, and I or someone else could start this thread in coffee shop. The thread would consist of mostly small talk that was not large enough to have its own thread. I believe this would greatly reduce the "Saw (movie X) it was meh" one liner posts. People could discuss each others smaller life occurrences without cluttering the Coffee Shop and the thread would get a certain culture to it over time.

Thoughts?

This happened once before and it was canned after some time.  There is too much potential for things to get out of hand and is harder in some ways to monitor issues that may arise as far as the cause and effects.

I like the idea.

We have had like "random thoughts" threads before - but nothing that ever really lasted as the place to have casual chat.

It would be cool if there was a built in real-time chat thing that was linked to the site. Something you could click on from the forum that would dump you in a chat box.

we have the chat box on the local nissan site. sometimes its good, but other times it just turns into a giant worthless discussion of blumpkin giving dinosaurs eating pee going to a bbq. literally.

That would be cool too.

I know that usually GDT's get out of hand and are hard to police, but why can't we just outline that the GDT will be self policed and if people have problems with flaming or otherwise they will be reported by other members to mod's and dealt with accordingly.

I'm just tired of seeing threads that have NO content. That could be put in a bigger thread that includes everything.

We also had an ongoing live chat aspect that was linked up to the site so that club members could chat in real time as an IM setup but it died within a month for it did not get enough use.

Real fast, we did have a thread you were talking about.  It got out of hand due to the participants.  There were several times the mods/admins had to take action within and it persisted.  After a good while it was decided that the thread needed to be shut down due to the fact that it was out of control and the whole monitoring of the thread started becoming much more of a chore than is normal.  It's not like we dont do our jobs, but it was getting to be so much with so many ties and cross talk that it became very muddled and difficult to handle situations.

Do a search for an club messenger/chat room or something.  If I remember correctly, Falkhen set one up for the club and it failed due to not enough interest in it beyond the first day or so when it was a novelty.

Colin is dead on.  It was a random thread that did indeed get very bad very fast.

I wasn't a moderator at the time, but its not worth having a thread like that again, as I've read the various mod only discussions that stemmed from that one thread.

Either way, its not going to happen again, as it will probably be deleted or locked quite fast if one is opened.  The Coffee shop is a general discussion SECTION.  We dont need one thread when we've got an entire section.

Well... some things aren't worthy of their own threads.
XanoJan 15, 2010, 3:35 am · #9

everything is worthy of its own thread   always.  Everyones thoughts are always welcome no matter how small.

I mean if you REALLY wanted to, you COULD post a completely pointless post in the coffee shop that says "I feel like having dinner at 5 tonight."  Mind you no one will probably reply, or if they reply it will need to be along the lines of discussing dinner, or 5 pm, or something related to the original post.

But getting replies isnt the point, and wouldnt be in a single GDT  thread either, as everyone would be posting their own thing, and not reading half the stuff other people say anyways.

if people were serious about it, we could dig up that chat system again, and get it going.  The problem is getting enough people to use it to make it worthwhile.

Arro, for once you are not as eloquent as I would think you would be.  But then again, I dont think there's too much more to be said and there is beauty in being concise.

XanoJan 15, 2010, 7:41 am · #13

and you just ruined that beauty by making a long winded post to say +1.

DraconisJan 15, 2010, 7:44 am · #14

Bust me in my balls why dont you there Xano?  LOL  I was waiting for Arro to reply but you did get me good on that one.

Pfft, blackberrys are overrated.  I prefer my Nokias.  Really looking forward to the N900.

It does exactly what I want it to do, akk the time. Plus it has PING to annoy the hell out of someone while they're on an international call at work.

But you're right. They fall under that same elitist views as some Iphone users take. Same as the whole chevy vs ford malarky. Apples vs oranges.

Well it seems like Maxpow has succeeded in creating a GDT.

I watched "Observe and Report" for the first time yesterday. That was, by far, the most funked up movie I saw in a while. I didn't think it was going to be anything like that.
