Unnecessary Conversation In For-sale Threads

There seems to be a lot of discussion in for sale threads, like

"Your car isn't worth that much," etc.

Don't you think that should be kept out of for sale threads? It seems like it would make more sense for any discussion of price, etc should be discussed via pm, phone, etc...privately so as not to tarnish the for sale ad.

I can see general questions like "Is there any rust?" and stuff like that being posted in these threads, but any bad-mouthing just doesn't seem right.

Let me know what you think about that.

Thanks,

Lee

i believe thats part of the rules anyway?

LeegamerJul 23, 2009, 7:21 pm · #3

If so, it hasn't been enforced lately.

I didn't see that in the "Wanted to sell" section rules though.

I think telling some guy that tries to sell his stock s12 for 5 grand firm and letting him know it is a little high and he might not get very much interest is doing him a favor. If no one lets him know he might be a little stumped why he is not selling his car. General unnecessary conversation like "your s12 looks like shit" or something I can under stand more.

Even still, that should be kept to PMs.

what if it was stock with 10,000 miles? garaged its whole life, and fj powered?

I think what I'm trying to say is, price-wise...anyone on this forum should have a general idea of what these cars are worth...

BUT

"Worth" varies depending on person.

Someone could be dead-set on buying a car for a certain price and then see all these "Your car is not worth that much" replies in the for-sale thread and it could cost the seller a sale or some money.

All the research needed to determine what a car is worth should be the responsibility of the buyer and posting Bullshit insults may, unfortunately sway some buyers' opinions.

PraizewoodJul 24, 2009, 10:25 am · #9

If we actually let some people buy those cars for a bit  more than what we pay for them, the general idea of price might raise. Which I think would be good for everyone.

ryan206Jul 24, 2009, 11:08 am · #10

If someone feels the price is too high, then offer. After a while of no buying they'll lower the price or decide to keep it

If you're not even interested, don't post. Doesn't matter if you think $20,000 is too expensive for a non running 200k mile ca20 salvage titled s12.

ok, per the WTS rules...

-It is the right of all registered users on this forum to comment about pricing posted in a "for sale" thread. This would include suggestions and even criticism.
-It is also the right of the original poster to comment further on said comments, and in the case of criticism, to defend their prices, or ask why the critic(s) feel the way he or she does.
-Lastly, It can be considered acceptable for debate to take place about the value of items for sale, in dispute or support of the originally posted prices. It is acceptable for prices to be amended by the original poster if they decide to do so.
-However, it is NOT in any way acceptable to insinuate that the original poster is "ripping" people off with their prices, or that they are in any way trying to take advantage of people. You can criticize the prices all you want, but it must be done CIVILLY, and with the expectation that the original poster can (and likely will) respond.

so.. Yes, you CAN make a comment such as "That price seems a bit high to me", or "I think you may have over priced your _______".  However, to call out someone and say "your car isnt worth that much" IN PUBLIC is awfully shady. To me. saying that is telling someone they are ripping people off. That, would be against the rules. civil, information backed statements are fair-game, BUT that still, IMO, should NOT be displayed publicly. It should be taken to PM. I was aware that discussions were taking place, but for the most part they seem civil. But, maybe whats civil to me, is not to you. SO, i ask you to take a look HERE, and become familiar with using the REPORT! button, should you feel a conversation if not appropriate either in your own thread, or one you come across.

Now, back to challenging someones pricing IN PUBLIC...I dont think its very conducive to someone trying to sell an item. At this time, I will continue this discussion with the other mods/admins, to get their opinion on amending the WTS rules. be advised, my opinion is NOT the opinion of the entire staff. there may be a better reason why things are they way they are. stay tuned.

That's basically what I'm saying.  I would have used the report feature, but instead I ended up PMing Arro, who advised me to post this thread.

I saw it happening a lot and decided just to bring it up that way.
ArroAug 12, 2009, 6:40 pm · #13

So then to summarize, you can say "wow that's a bit high IMO", but you can't bash and slam and flame.

Right?

LeegamerAug 12, 2009, 6:49 pm · #14

I mean, honestly I've noticed in most other forums that even that isn't allowed, but we're a lot more layed back and friendly here than most forums.

nismologistAug 12, 2009, 6:51 pm · #15

I would say if a person has a problem with the price they should say nothing unless they are interested in buying the car. otherwise it is just a waste of forum space.

It just seems more logical to keep that to PMs/phone/in-person.
ArroAug 12, 2009, 6:55 pm · #17

Thus far I've allowed it because unlike other larger communities, we don't have a large base of sale listings to give listers an idea of how much. That, and our cars are rather sketchy in value. What is worth to one person might not be the price worth to another. Getting feedback from regulars on here helps zero in things. An initial listing is sometimes a rough estimate and way off, when not posted by a regular user on here.

Now, I don't advocate uncivil flaming at list prices, but to make a rule about that specific to the sale listings is like "training wheels" to me. We have an overall rule here that civil conduct is a MUST, after all. I think the real problem is we have a few people who can't control their mouths (or should I say their fingers) and lack any self-control or respect.

Of course, we as moderators *could* start leaving warnings in place once issued, and let them accrue.. then perma-ban as we *should* when people get to 100%. Honestly, a couple people at least have reached 100% and have NOT been banned. And incidentally (or perhaps not so incidentally) these are the ones who often are uncivil with price listings... and really with other things as well.

You tell me: create a rule for *each and every thing* like a bunch of "nazis", or just let people hang themselves quickly so we can rid ourselves of those who don't use respect?

I'd rather leave it in the power of the individual, not the rule, but that's me.

And if things get out of line... isn't that what the moderators are for? Moderation means just that. Not "rule enforcement", although that is also a side responsibility.

LeegamerAug 12, 2009, 7:01 pm · #18

I can agree with that.

I guess like what has been pointed out before, we should all remember that nifty little "Report" button and use when necessary.

MaxpowSep 8, 2009, 6:30 am · #19

If people didn't give recommendations on prices, alot of the newer members, and the people less familiar with regular prices would feel duped when they saw the same thing go for less at a different time. I think it makes it easier for someone who is trying to get into our hobby if we have people who can have a civil discourse about what a price for something should be or at least a ball park.

Agreed.

Jsvob03ok, per the WTS rules...

If someone were to say "your car isn't worth that much" is an opinion and "to me" is understood to be the end of the sentence. I don't think it's shady, because other people can just as easily say it is worth the asking price or more (and I have seen that exact situation.) Perhaps it's just semantics, but I won't think someone is saying a price is a rip-off until they say "that price is a rip-off". I guess to me it's a mean what you say and say what you mean kinda thing.

I agree, as was said by Maxpow, "civil discourse" is the rule, and moderators will enforce based on that.
