Hi i've had bothered you in club-s12 about an older 1985 fj20e but that was sold and I have now found another silvia which is a RS 12 1988 with CA18ET.

I want your opinion on if it's a good car and the shape of it from the outside. Engine and transmission should work all OK.

And I got another question as well - is there a output difference in the german version of the ca18et and the american? I see two things around - 122 hp and 135 hp. This has to be the german spec version.

These backlights look like the american version?

Is the front lower spoiler right? I have seen the same but without the mid
part and it seem to bend more in the middle. Might have been broken and then fixed?

Those lights are standard euro and they were modded. USDM 18ET's had 8 spark plugs for emissions. I think Euro's had 4. Do you have 4?

1988 seams late for a Ca18et, are you sure its not a DET? Which would raise further questions.

You have a saggy MK2 lip. Easy fix.

So the lights are aftermarket modding?

No haven't checked the sparks but does that change performance and is it possible to mod the engine to a 8 sparks if it's not?

Actually now that you made me notice that about the years, it is a 87 ca18et - the owner told me it was a 88

Cool because it doesn't look that good that way

EDIT:
Does the RS mean anything to performance or trim?
TalkingGoatsDec 18, 2008, 10:31 am · #4

The lights are most likely a decent spray paint job. No real performance benefit to 8 plugs, just a cleaner burn.

I'm not sure because the side parts of the backlights dont look like the mk2's as well. It looks like they might have swapped the original lights with the ones of the 3.0.

So the engine output should be 135hp?

What country are you in?

EightySix200SXDec 18, 2008, 2:12 pm · #7

ca18et was offered in uk througout the whole run so i doubt its a det only japan got det'd s12 stock in 88

praisewood= no rs12 is just the chassis code meaning Ã,®=hatchback

mine is a PS12 COUPE LUXURY MODEL.....

anyway nice s12 brother welcome!!!!

PraizewoodDec 18, 2008, 3:48 pm · #8

I'm in Denmark.

Thought the rs was some nicer version of the s12
So the rims are also modded to be black?

I want the car in original shape so gotta know what differs from the original car.

Well the car isnt mine yet but will go for it in the next day but thanks

ArroDec 18, 2008, 4:30 pm · #9

Well welcome to the club, another person from Denmark  Someone else from Denmark just signed up a few months ago on here.

There needs to be a european S12 forum I think... the UK guys have been mostly keeping to themselves recently, and more people in the EU have been signing up on here.

tommyDec 18, 2008, 4:39 pm · #10

The power difference between the USDM ca18et and EURO ca18et is due to all USDM cars having to pass california emissions which are way higher than in europe.  The main difference between the 2 engine is a different CAM specs and fuel map too match it.  The european cars have the euro cam (wait, that does makes sense after all ).  As for the rest, I believe everything is the same

rageDec 19, 2008, 1:32 am · #13

the tail lights look like our US 6pack tails that have been painted or something

200sxkitcarDec 19, 2008, 3:09 pm · #14

or a piece of electrical tape... either way, an easy fix.

if you are unsure of the mechanicals, consider bringing it to a mechanic for a thorough inspection before you purchase, that way you'll know what you are getting into.  the mechanical stuff isn't that bad, its wreck/rust damage that you need to be aware of, the current owner may be completely honest but have no idea of its existance, due to being hidden or repaired long ago.  Something to consider....

FJ20 still, cool

It was when I registered myself at this forum I was gonna buy a fj20e, that's why my name

The red 87'er has 8 spark plugs by the way - that will be a 135 hp engine?
seb.racingJan 14, 2009, 10:31 am · #17

ok, the CA18 is a very good engine

the rear lights are different than the U.S. lights, I had friends who I talk, I have not thought

PraizewoodJan 22, 2009, 6:27 am · #18

The rear lights are painted and modified with tape (which cannot come off   ).

I got this question and do not want to spam with new topics and since this post is in garage already I thought it was the right place.

My engine is in really bad condition: broken wastegate, clicks from engine, blown exhaust manifold and one of the cylinders is not getting any spark at times. Therefore I am going to do a complete overhaul but at the same time use some nice parts. I have already ordered 4 x intake ngk iridium spark plugs and 4x exhaust with same type plugs. Now looking for magnacor spark plug wires and thought of the KV85 but the prob is that it's a 8,5 mm while the spark plugs are 6mm. Will this cause any trouble? It does say at magnacors website that it can fit into all kind of spark plugs but then why the idea of having different size wires?

Promising some pictures after installation (not like you haven't seen before, but pictures are always good )!

Sold the FJ20 = Fail

the FJ20 has 155hp and can handle some boost and is Rare

the ca18et has 135 and will more than likely melt if you boost it much more and is as common as a hooker in vegas...

oh well, at least you still have an S12

I never got a fj20e  I was just about getting it as it got sold but it had troubles with the transmission and this ca18et I got for half price with everything working.. well almost. Troubles with engine as stated just before.

Yup, a happy member of the club silvia family

I don't see why larger wires are an issue, as long as the boot is the same.

How much is hp gain from using better spark plugs + cables + dual coil mod?

ok, thank you for your answer

Update time today!

My turbo is blown and the camshaft is probably going to be replaced due to noises. Sucks big time.... BUT it also gives me the push to get some real stuff into that ca18et, which would definitely be euro cam (I got the lame 122 hp one I found out) and probably a T25 garrett.

There is just one thing: I don't know how much the fuel consumption is going to change with bigger turbo and more aggresive camshaft.
Fuel isn't cheap here and I'm a student so that's something to take in consideration. Do any of you who has replaced the tiny t2 with a t25 feel the difference?

Ngk irradium IX and magnecor kv85 cables are already installed and I will post pics of these as soon as I can

seb.racingFeb 17, 2009, 10:55 am · #26

The T25 has breath 0.6bars, you will have a big difference. 370cc injector installs of S13, reprogramming ecu, it allows you to mount a 0.8bars

PraizewoodMay 1, 2009, 8:35 pm · #27

I won't be upgrading the engine that much for now. Just gradually

Now. I have just ordered new pedals and gear knob from a japanese site and they look really cool. I'm excited about how it will look in the car and there will also be steering wheel of same brand when I got the funds. Here are some pictures of the products for now:

The pedals here are the automatic transmission type, but it's basicly the same shape and style as the manual.

Also this way they found out that what was told to be a cellphone cam picture from a nokia commercial turned out to be from a nikon camera

You can't buy directly for impul racing, so I found this website I've ordered from:

Ok that was gay. They didn't produce the pedal set anymore so I'm going to look for them used. Instead I ordered some jgtc stuff

Thanks!

Got a lot of stuff I need to put in it actually, including the SE mudflaps, the bartco manifold & t25 turbo, new bushings, new speakers in front and rear and polish up the stock wheels until I can afford new wheels. Also digital dash as soon as I get it from S12God. But all of it after vacation in 2 weeks.

we still lack a small parts, we are never satisfied

EternalSwapJun 17, 2009, 10:06 pm · #36

whoa, your hazard switch is in a weird place

the new parts look great! i bet they feel great too

PraizewoodJun 18, 2009, 12:30 am · #37

Yea I also noticed comparing to the us cars, it seems you don't have any buttons there. Yeah quality those parts, but damn expensive as well, emptied my pockets  It says on their website that the steering wheel is used in the super gt calsonic but I haven't seen any proof on that.

So Saturday night I finally was able to pull the CA20 for the last time!  However after the surgery I noticed that it was very beneficial that I did pull it.  As it would turn out there is a 12" piece of cancer on the lower strut tower seam and a 6" on the front vertical strut seam.  I must warn the following pictures are graphic.  The repair to follow...

i thought my tank springing a leak was bad....hah! Your doing another ka swap right? Probably a good thing you wield that ish up as the ka would rip your fenders clean off...

Alex FrostOct 5, 2009, 12:22 am · #43

Drivers fender is now gone...I have three sets of them   I have to ditch the drivers side Macpherson so that I can get a clean spot to weld   Then the cutting begins.  I'm so glad this is not my daily anymore.  As for motorvation yes it is going to be another KA swap.  I am getting pretty good at it now that I also put one into a Corolla...lol

From the front it sorta looks like an S12 eh...

nice! I went for a ride awhile back in a 18det ae notch and the guy said he knew where a couple of ka aes where for cheap that he was tempted to pick up just because of how fun they are. I love my ka s12 notch tho... Things just need to stop braking on it!

Alex FrostOct 5, 2009, 12:27 am · #45

Aren't things supposed to break on them; I must have gotten the wrong model.  You are in the growing pains part of the new S12.  Get this stuff fixed and then it should be clear sailing...*quickly knocks on wood*

sam31183Oct 5, 2009, 12:32 am · #46

lol...i am well aware of having to shake down 80s cars to get the bugs out...but it is so annoying...hopefully after getting the caliper fixed i can go back to hooking up the rest of my gauges and driving this thing. Oh, I eventually need to hook my cd deck up also...hah.

XanoOct 5, 2009, 12:34 am · #47

so yeah....this looks just like what sterling fixed on my old S12 that I sold to him.  Lulz.

That LOOKS cool, but is a terribly bad idea lol.  A single exhaust leak and your risking your life.

dude and i thought my Z31 rust was bad, that S12 takes the cake, it by far surpasses my Z31 in rust.
