Keeping Things On-topic

I am seeing a lot of off-topic posting in threads that do not warrant it, and people complaining in those same threads that it is happening. I've also received some complaints about this privately.

A little bit of banter and convo is fine, but use good judgment. If I see you are contributing to the threat topic, and you somehow got off-topic, that's one thing, but if your only post(s) in a thread are off-topic or not contributing (such only posting smartass comments on someone's request for technical help), then I will remove your post, issue you a warning, and that will be that. If it's your second offense within a week or two, you'll be getting a temporary ban on posting privileges.

I don't mind that we get off topic now and then. It happens. And in the past, it wasn't an issue, so we didn't need to get tighter on these things. But in the last few months, a few of you have abused that flexibility on here, and that is going to end.

I feel that all of us moderators are able to determine what is ok and what is ridiculous, so please don't tell me that we need to establish *exactly* what is ok and what is not ok on this. It's our right to determine that.

ALSO...

I am seeing too many of you FAIL to put things in the proper sections. Some of the time, I can see it might be uncertain where to put something, and I sympathize with that, but some of the time, some of you are just lazy... or dumb? I am hoping it's just lazy. TAKE THE TIME to change to the other section. Don't post a question about suspension or wheels or whatever in the "Welcome" section, and for godsakes, don't try to sell items anywhere other than the "Wanted to Sell" section! Similar to the off-topic issue, if I think you've been here long enough to know better, I or another moderator *may* issue a warning on your account. If you're a repeat offender, similar to the off-topic issue, we may take further action on you, so REMEMBER -- it is YOUR responsibility.

AND PLEASE, stop putting titles like "need help" or "lsd" or "question for you". I will come down on those just as quickly. Use some *common sense* and put the actual reason in the title.

i remember having a huge bitchfest with the mods a few months ago about this

im glad to see something is finally being done about it

This forum is over moderated.

ArroSep 29, 2008, 9:12 pm · #4

This forum would be in utter shambles if it wasn't for the moderation. People get lazy and put shit wherever they want. That was the point of this thread, or would you prefer to have technical threads constantly bloated with bullshit? You tell me.

as much as i dislike many of the moderaters here, they do thier job, and very well at that. i have seen, and definitly contributed to the madness when there wasnt much moderation, and this place was a huge ego/bitch-fest. keep it up mods.

LOL you have 16 posts in two years and you want to criticize? Wow, that's nuts (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif) You're either a lurker or hardly ever on, but in either case you're not really a *contributor*, are ya? Lurkin's fine, but don't criticize this community unless you want to contribute to it.

I'm 34. I don't have ADD keeping me from things on here. I have a *life*. And FYI the forum's changed ownerships a couple times now because of that very reason. I'd say it's been maintained pretty good considering that.

its quite simple.moderator or not,the fact is its lame when someone writes up a question they need answered badly and then someone just starts blabbin about somethi9ng that has nothin to do with it.its bull shit.

ArroNov 24, 2008, 8:28 pm · #14

That's the nature of internet forums, and like you said, moderator or not. Anyone who bitches about that needs to get fuckin' real. My roommate is 52 and she's leaps and bounds ahead of her peers when it comes to the internet, and its distinct advantages and disadvantages.

If something got posted incorrectly in the for sale section and the post was locked or removed, that's the rules. If we didn't enforce them, this place would be utter chaos. Mango seems to think it is already, but again without the enforcement it would be a lot worse. And for ever stupid, frivilous post someone puts up, there are many more *answered* questions and technical results from heads put together. I don't realy care that Mango has worked on lots and lots of S12's, thus far his "expertise" hasn't been shared, nor has he contributed to the technical developments. So what good is experience if it's not shared with the community?

So no, it's not about how old you are. It's not about post-whores who have a bunch of posts and not much useful assistance or collaboration. It's about those people who have taken the time to thoroughly discuss suspensions, engine swaps, electronics issues, and other things. Those people are here.

What we know now is vastly different than what little we knew back in '02 when the forum was started, and that didn't happen accidentally. It surely isn't the result of guys with under 20 posts who think that their personal experience qualifies as S12 expertise. Working on them isn't the same as developing solutions and upgrades. Not in the least.

That's true arro.

When I need help I don't want to read about how you did that a year ago but you don't know how to do it. And I don't need to read through 9 posts filled with crap to read what I was looking for.

I was a mod to a forum called forzacentral and it was hard work keeping ppl in line. So I have respect for all mods/admins

bluke1Nov 26, 2008, 1:35 am · #16

i generally dont post in these sections, but when i first read mango's post, i wondered how his stuff was overlooked. but at the same time, i felt like arro did,a guy with all that hands on experience and knowledge about the s12 on the forum and he sits back without ever lending any helpful advice? some things are no-brainers, and many can answer. but apparently mango knows a lot of stuff, and could be extremely helpful to many of us, yet he chooses not to. i dont understand. i guess i would rather have 10 people post ideas that may or may not be right and some off topic stuff than one guru that never answers anyones questions. im not trying to talk badly about mango, but would appreciate if he actually helped people with his years of experience instead of complaining about something he hasnt contributed to.

I couldn't disagree more... half of the purpose of this forum is maintenance and repair, but I'd say the other half is definitely for tuning the car for performance. The fact that you disapprove of tuning these for street performance tells me you probably don't even care about what most of us are trying to do here. You think modifying the fuel system is a bad idea, which virtually eliminates any possibilities for forced induction tuning. I can't even imagine what you think about engine swaps or even something as simplpe as a mildly-tuned CA18ET TURBO model. Honestly man, I'm not trying to be mean, but I don't think you can appreciate this forum for what it is. None of your maintenance and repair experience is going to help in tuning these cars if you're not willing to go beyond factory specs. It's not like we can't read an FSM, too... and actually, some of us have improved on Nissan's flawed designs in some cases.

And I'll say this to you AND to Premo since he apparently chimed in: MOST internet forums are filled with a lot of useless posts and lazy people who don't help, only detract from the solutions. But like Brent (bluke1) said,

bluke1 @ Nov 25 2008, 05:35 PMi guess i would rather have 10 people post ideas that may or may not be right and some off topic stuff than one guru that never answers anyones questions.

Frankly, this recent activity in this thread only strengthens my convictions that we're doing the best we can (which is really good), and if you look at how little we knew when we started, and how much more we know in just 6 years' time, I'd say that anyone who wants to criticize the general state of the forum is off-base, period.

I have to agree completely with you arro but what if your ? doesn't get answered? O.O I might not have done much for the forum as a whole but I'm learning here like many of us here and when something is happening and I start a thread in the place I think is right but I have only got a response from 1 person who was helpful but I need more feedback/suggestions and everyone keeps going over my thread without a guess....it gets really anoying sometimes...yeah /rant
XanoNov 27, 2008, 11:53 pm · #28

My questions generally get answered by nobody when I have a real tech question.

So generally, I call sterling directly, as him, ask a local mechanic buddy, and fix the shit without any other outside help.

its frustrating to post questions and get no answers 99% of the time. and the times I do get answers, is because I bump the post over and over, and people get tired of seeing it in the list of recent posts lol.

Either way, I enjoy this forum, as its something for me to read and post on when I have nothing else to do.

DraconisNov 28, 2008, 12:31 am · #29

See, that's the interesting thing both Jman and Xano pointed out.

For the more hardcore tech. help people need, I would feel safe that the majority of us wont know exactly what the answer is. Many of us may have an idea or have to go through what they experienced in life and apply it. But if you want an answer that is 'bullet' proof so to speak without having any amount of hesitation, then you will have to wait for the few who know their stuff cold. And there are far fewer of us on the forum as are in many forums that I have frequented (exception seems to be the Skyline forums in Aus) that have solid information that is tried and true. Most people are internet mechanics.

i for one dont say too much not because I dont know a bit or experienced a bit, but I dont find it as rock solid as Sterling. Most of the time I talk to those I feel that are more solid in their information: Hung, Arro, Sterling, Julie, Randy (local) and find out that I'm either right or not far from the answer. There are a few others too but none come to mind. Actually with those people mentioned above, we tend to confer with each other about what we know, ask questions back and forth and often times enhance both party's knowledge in addition with coming up with some other concepts that are most of the time purely hypothetical.

The problem is, it is much harder to do that on the net and gets a lot of cross talk. So basically we are just trying to stem any further explosion of unneeded idle talk, esp. in the tech forums. It happens wherever you are. At a job, at school... hell if you're a parent or kid same thing. Things are let go... the rules seem to loosen just a bit but at some point there is a friendly reminder just to say "Hey, dont get too carried away please." If we can just take these reminders in stride then it will be much better. Yeah... Arro, prolly calm down just a lil. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

As for Mango's opinion of modifying cars. I have to agree with Arro. The main concept of an import car is to tune it. The Silvia is in a sense Japan's equivalent to the domestic Mustang. They were made with the understanding that they would be tuned/tampered with. If you cant possibly understand why someone would want to do this to our cars, I would almost hate to hear what you think about my car. Actually, I would welcome to hear your honest opinion of what you think everything I've done to my car and how 'outlandish' it may be. I know this. I heard a lot when I first started my progression to where my 12 is today and yet I kept on with my vision and have changed a lot of opinions about the S12 and the capability of it.

If you look at the car industry itself, it thrives on people like us in a sense. The aftermarket industry is one of the major reasons as to why the car industry progresses. If it wasnt for us tuners and our Carbon Fiber demands, the Aero-Space industry wouldnt have realized as quickly as they did the use of it. Like any industry, there is the niche of people who want to push the boundary and explore what is possible. If we were all content with how things are and didnt play with things, then there would be no progression.

Anyway, end of my opinion. but seriously Mango, please tell me where you think I've crossed a line with my car. It would be interesting to hear. You can PM me if you feel it's more necessary.

falkhenNov 28, 2008, 1:14 am · #30

absolutly true Colin hence the expectation of the next follwing generation of silvia/240sx/200sx. and the fare sized Nismo parts catalog.

as for what Mango is going on about...
modified cars that fall out side the scope of what is considered not factory or OEM. makes it more difficult to work on the cars and that takes more time. Mechanics work time based flate rate. unlike to performance shops that would a hr'ly wage or commission depending what level your exptease. Nothing wrong with what your doing Mango becuase i have worked for 2 Dealerships and its easy money. but it was not for me. So the less time you spent working on each car means you make more money and the more volume you can push giving you a better over all rating( keeping in mind that you quality is on par as well)... problem with this is that you have only time to learn what factory is. performance is extra and is whole diffrent industry. whole diffrent thought process... its obvious that some of you just don't get it. becuase after what Mango posted he was critisiezed....

WTF is ribs and BBq sauce have to do with this thread.
