pick up a 302 and a C4 tranny.  it WILL fit in there.  grab one out of a fox body stang and brab a set of econoline heads (i hear they flow WAY better, good junk yard performance).  it will fit in there way nice, take up less room then a VG and way about the same.  hell, get some aluminum heads if you're concerned about the weight.  the after market for the 302 is SUBSTANITIAL so getting high numbers will be cake.  not to mention the sweet low end tq.  dont listen to anyone that says they dont rev like a 4 cyl.  thats some gay bullshit.  ive owned well over 30 cars now.  anything from 4-8 cyl, straight to v's.  a properly setup v8 will rev just as well and provide a much nicer hp/tq curve.  good luck.  lemme know if you need direction of some forums for info on the swap or just general ford/chevy/chrystler info

I'm all for the V8 idea.
I don't know of anyone on this forum doing it yet.
V8 for the win.

Yup that's very true Premo. A buddy of mine has a 68 stang with a .030 over 302. That thing can sling 8500-9000 all day. It's rather insane to hear it. hell....I watched him stand that thing on the rear bumper last year. Bent up the rear liscence plate in the process. He had to move his battery cutoff switch because when he was doing that before it was shutting off the power to the car...lol

HUH?

anyways the 302 will fit but there's one thing premo left out, your firewall has to be doctor'd to accomodate the bigger engine. once done you are about to subject a 4cyl to rigours of a powerful V8. It'll be like taking your car off-roading without the off-roading. If you ever visit Rio Grande valley in south texas theres alot of hybrids running around. the most impressive is a Pinto with a 351W fully blown. His car's chassis and basically everything original was reinforced due to the vibrations of the engine.

Good luck with the concept and the idea if you need some Silvia-Stang body design I got a few from when I was thinking of this.

If your going to get a ford 5.0 get a model 1989-1993 mustang 5.0. You want the mass air system used on these motors and not the bullshit speed density system on earlier models. Also they came with a ford AOD automatic trans or a tremec t-5 5 speed from the factory, never a c4. I'd say go with the t-5, but both trans will take tons of punishment and ford 5.0's are some of the toughest motors ever built. I have a lot of experince on these motors and transes.....Ive owned a 89 t-bird and still have my 91 GT stang. If you have any more questions or need more info pm me. I have a project in the works for a 5.0 HO and an aod into my 85 celica coupe.

Aggro CragOct 31, 2006, 12:07 pm · #17

cuz it's a v8

SylviaSerdaDec 19, 2006, 11:38 am · #18

but is their a 5 speed avail?

MrBobDec 19, 2006, 8:33 pm · #19

There is no manual transmission that will bolt to the VH45. A 5.0 Ford or small block chevy would be easier to swap in because they are much smaller that the VH45, which is almost 30 inches wide. The VH will hit the brake booster, so something must be modified for it to fit.

akihabroDec 19, 2006, 8:46 pm · #20

bah...im going vq35de...i have the engine(just the long block) gonna be a long job tryin to fit this sucker in and make it work in my mkII notch.  only cost me $50! cept its one of those g35 recall engines that suposidly consume oil

HereticDec 20, 2006, 9:56 pm · #21

a Chev 350 with a manual would fit in there for sure.  I'm not sure about having to doctor the firewall, remember that since the driveshaft has to be custom made anyways, that will give you some room to play with engine.trans location.  Just need a few inches for the rad/elec fan.   However if you want the stock shifter rod to line up with the stock floorpan hole that might take some work, it probably won't happen. But you can always cut a hole in the floor and have one made, with a S-shape, similar to what you might find in a AC Cobra.

I would reccomend the 4 or 5 speed standard trans, because they are very small (and lighter) in comparison to the automatics.  I can almost gaurntee an Auto would requiring cutting the trans tunnel out, and making a new one out of sheet metal.

PremoDec 20, 2006, 11:21 pm · #22

i was taking some measurements at the local pick-your-part this weekend and it looks like the T5 shifter lines up right about where it needs to be.  if anything it might be back an inch which would be a-ok in my book   from what i could tell (and i didnt pull an engine and fit it, just from visual) the firewall didnt need any bashing.

Was the T5 significantly wider than the s12 transmissions? The tunnel is already a  pain in my ass, don't want it to get wider.

Interestingly, the turbo 280zx came with a T5, dunno if that means anything for us though.

Isn't there a member on here that has already put a vh45 in their S12......turbo'd if I remember correctly

EDIT:  Here it is.........

as did the early Z31 turbos

it didnt look much wider, but to be honest i wasnt paying attention to width, i was seeing where the shifter was lining up

SpooledDec 22, 2006, 5:23 pm · #26

I put a T5 from a Z31 Turbo in my previous S12 SE.  The T5 is definitely wider.  It did fit in the tunnel, but just barely, and I had to massage one area.  The Z31 trans put the shifter about 1.5 inches further back, which I thought was a better location anyway as it lines up with the steering wheel.

PremoDec 23, 2006, 4:02 pm · #27

yea, but the bell housing is different from the ford T5 to the early turbo Z31 T5.  so the Z guys say anyway.  an inch and a half would definetly be nice as i think the shifter sits a bit to far fwd

SpooledDec 23, 2006, 4:23 pm · #28

Oh yeah - I know the bellhousings are different, but I was talking about the tranny case itself.  It's a bit wider than the C trans that sits in the tunnel now.  But it does fit.  And yeah - having the shifter back further felt a lot more natural.  Wish my current S12 had that setup, but I haven't bothered with it yet.

i think the ls2 and ls7 motor and trani will fit and its fuel injected
i've seen s13's with a a full ls2 motor and trani from a corvette so why not the ls7

ls7? are you kidding me? the crate motor alone is like $24,000, that 7 liter v8 500hp+ dry sumped monster deserves a better car to be in. not to mention the 475 tq would probably twist s12's into two pieces. ls1 however i could see easily happening, especially how cheap they are
TalkingGoatsFeb 17, 2007, 10:48 am · #31

I am not going to start a new thread for this since it on topic.

Im dumping the KA24 idea. The LT1 Motor is only 15-20 lbs heavier than the KA. I have a guy in my neighborhood that will help me do the swap for a grand minus tranny. (I am buying the motor from him) I think I am going to do a full conversion on the rear end and just pick up a junker camaro to pull it all out of. So I will have a bastardized no rice drift machine. Do you think im going to be throwing hondas off when I pull up to a light and the whole car is bouncing back in for from the v8 idle? lol

Seraph1mMay 5, 2007, 4:14 am · #32

aargh.....living in Germany has woken up my V8 lust....i mean, i want a V8, an american one, in an S12. and i want it bad....everybodey here is all "2.0 liters engine? wtf!? thats huge!!!"

i wanna drive down the street to the 302 marching tune

@^*FeNdERbeNdeR*^@May 5, 2007, 6:09 pm · #33

There are a lot of 2 Litre engines out there that will eat a V8 for breakfast, but the sound of a V8 is really something coming out of a car the size of an S12.

I have a 3.5 Litre Rover SD1 V8 that I think would do well in the '12 with a blower and a dirty great Holley poking through the bonnet. It's probably similar in weight to the cast iron CA18 too being all alloy.

im going V8 in the coming future!

gregorioJun 1, 2007, 10:58 pm · #35

there is a v8 conversion in my future dream also,  not for my SE,  but for my 2g rx7.

(it only has 113k mi on the rotary motor, so time is on my side.)

the conversion looks pretty easy when compared to an s12 v8 swap.

(might even stick a vg30 in the rx7)

some jackass offered to buy my foxbody stang once in an auction i had on ebay (you could see it next to that Z)...and by foxbody i mean my SE.  he couldnt tell the difference. what a dick lol

HA!

even stevie wonder could tell the difference between a mustang & a nissan,

the nissan is the one that rattles!!!!

but seriously, I concur,

if you need cheap V8 power get a mustang or early 90's Q45.

up in Trinity FL (northwest of Tampa) I saw a FD Rx7 with a LS1 V8 (had corvette valve covers). Its was sweet! some guy saw his car at the races, and came back in a full built Mustang LX and got his as kicked by the RX7!
Aggro CragMay 2, 2013, 5:31 am · #40

you could also get a SR20DE from a pick and pull I'm sure they are in abundance as well. That engine was in a lot of Nissans in the U.S.
