When it rains, it snows ...

Well, I spent most of Sunday trudging on, trying to get my S12 together in a final rush.

Now, granted this didn't bug me as much as it would most of you - since my car is bashed up to begin with.

But, it still sucks.

I went out to find a new bash on the one decent piece of body steel left on the car.

now, this is the fender before it got hit, so I wasn't exactly crying

turns out the guy in the parking space next to mine hit the car on the right side of him, and in a panic, whipped the car around and hit me.

I got off lucky, as the first car hit suffered pretty severe damage. I got pictures of my car, the damage, the damage on his car, and the 3rd car.

But when I confronted the guy on Saturday his English was so bad (or he just used it as an excuse) that he just smiled and said "I don't get."

So now I have to consider calling the police in to deal with it ... I don't want to, as I had a spare fender anyway, but the guy on the other side has more than $1000 damage I'm sure. So I guess I'll wait and see

but anyway, I got sidetracked putting a new fender on. After that, I decided to finish painting my rims (I hadn't done all of them yet)

(naked S12 ... oooh!)

I go out this morning to take a picture to show all of you guys just how cool I really am icon_wink.gif and this is what I find.

nice rims!

my s-12 is officially in storage icon_biggrin.gif crappy all seasons and no snow tires would make driving her suicide. and the winter salt would surely put the final nail in the coffin.

i might take her out for a spin on sunday (supposed to be + temperatures)

Aargh!! White frozen HELL! For those that don't know I grew up in Buffalo so I feel you Toronto guys' pain. But thank God I bugged out after college and headed SOUTH. Still go up to Buffalo for holidays and stuff, here's what my S12 experienced during Christmas 2001:

Record snowfall, 7 feet in two days.
Never again will I live any further north than I do now. We will probably see a snowstorm or two here this winter, but here 2 inches is considered a major snowfall and the city basically shuts down until it melts (within a day or two).
V6's can be fun in the snow...or they can be terrifying........
On the plus side, Mr. 200, your car looks very nice with the pristine snow on it like that and the now-matching fender. Is that a Chevy Citation behind it in the snow pic? Haven't seen one of those in awhile.

A friend of mine had a X11 Chevy Citation when we were kids, he thought it was fast until his dad blew him away with this 427 68 chev long box. MR 200 I feel your pain these sort of things always come at the worst times.

the 195 goodyear "wingfoots" that hold my car to the earth are not very "snow happy", so driving my S12 in the flurries we get can get pretty "interesting" there is a whole lot of white knuckles and cussing. But hey, that's livin, right?

Call me crazy but i love the snow. I miss the winters in Canada. Ive driven in snow but have never DRIVEN in snow if you catch my drift. lol

As for fall theres nothing like taking a long cruise down an open country road with all the leaves changing colors..... drifting around courners..... kicking up dust and leaves behind you....... good stuff!

Snow rocks! Granted the most snow we ever get here is around 6 inches, but still I'm all about snow. If I don't get up to the mountain a couple times a year, it's just not winter. And who says you can't drive fast rwd cars on snow?

I like the snow, driving in it is a blast, i have always had RWD cars durring the winters and never have a problem, the one year i had a FWD car ('80 pontiac Pheonix"75 dollar wonder car") every other day i would ditch itor hit a curb or go spinning across the intersection, in a RWD i can go all the way to work without once being strait on the road, and that kicks ass! icon_twisted.gif !

My ex-boss at the University did his post doc work in Ontario. He was amazed at all the complaining. school closures, etc about snow that went on in Wisconsin.

OTOH, when one of my classmates did his grad work in Bozeman, MT, he spent more than a few nights sleeping in the lab, as he said it was too nasty to go outside and walk 12 blocks to his apt.

I guess it all depends what you are used to. Around here, when it gets below -30C, pretty much everything stops, as most vehicles don't have engine heaters, and as such will barely even turn over, much less start at that temp and below.

My old Mustang was a great temp sensor. When it got below -28 deg C, the carb linkage would completely lock up. One could barely move it by hand. I had to put a light bulb under the hood to keep the linkage warm enough to drive.

I'm with you BullsEye. My first seven years on the road were in Buffalo, I've had my fill.
The same thing happens here. If they even predict a snowfall, the stores get mobbed, milk, bread, and batteries are cleaned out, schools start announcing closures, events get cancelled. A couple years ago they predicted four inches, every school closed for that day, and we didnt' see a single flake. That night the weatherman was on TV like, "Uhh....sorry!"
The most fun I ever had driving in snow was when I used to deliver auto parts in Buffalo...a little snow made work a lot more interesting, I was driving RWD pickup trucks that did not belong to me. That was the best.

The main thing with snow and ice is stopping. Its pretty easy to go fast with good tires, but unfortunately one cannot stop. I was running 60 on snow and ice yesterday in my Z31 as there was no other traffic around.

However once their are other cars around, I drop back to 25-30, as you never know when one of those SUV's is going to roll, and at that point you will not be able to stop. One rule of thumb is to always run the same speed or slower than the truckers. Most of those guys are pretty weather aware, and its money in their pocket to run fast. More than I few times I've heard about the SUV that blew past them at 70 and 10 minutes later the semi passed them up in the median while running 30.

For some reason the Z31 seems to do a lot better than the S12. I would guess its probably due to the tires, but perhaps the weight of the VG30 helps. Maybe someday I'll find a S12 with the VG30.....

Often times the cheaper tires have a softter grade of rubber. This usually helps with snow performance.

Thanks
Ron

we got around 5" total in my area. the van's $17/tire all seasons don't cut it, especially considering all four tires are somewhere below 50% tread remaining... not fun icon_sad.gif my strategy for driving the van in snow is simple; act as if you have no brakes at all, and in the snow, that isn't very far from the truth icon_surprised.gif
