Not if you do it yourself ... It's easy to get the doors/jams without taking too much apart. All you have to do is take off your door panels, and peel back your carpets. Then drape a piece of masking paper down from the inside weathersrtipping so it hangs down and makes a paper door. That way you can hit all the door jams, the floor etc.

maaco charges various amounts depending on the job. Its about 200 for the cheapest maaco, then a couple qualities in between that an the 2 grand one. They do a pretty good job.
You might want to sand it down yourself, if you dont want the paint just slapped on top... not sure if they'll sand.

i haven't done a lot of painting but prep work is the key. if you really do good prep work even a $200 maaco job can come out looking great. that 2K paint job most likely $200 worth of painting (the same as the cheapie price) and $1800 worth of prep work.
never had to paint a car, so what kind of prep work would i have to do if say I was bringing in my car for maaco's $200 job?
hey, sorry for the lengthy time to reply... been away.
yeh its a full body spray, inside and out, in the doors and all.

fix any dents, holes and imperfections. sand down the areas that are going to be painted. make sure the car is CLEAN. and if you can, do the masking yourself (you might be able to do it outside the paint place in the parking lot). read a book on car painting from the library. they'll give you a pretty good idea of what to do. or call the shop and ask them.
if you're paying $200 for a paint job they'll take no care in prep work. masking will be fast and crappy and they'll just shoot right over any dirt or crud that's on the car.
It is easy to drop $800-$1000 USD for paint alone. That includes primer, sealer, base and clearcoats. Activators and reducers.
That is paint shop prices too, not retail. For that matter good luck walking in off the street and even buying paint now.
Those prices are for the good stuff aka Dupont, PPG, Sikkens.
White and black are the cheapest and red is the most expensive.
Metallics, metal flakes, pearls, micas, flip flops the price increases from there. And I cant remember what the name of that crap icon_smile.gif that DuPont sells now is but it is ungodly expensive.

Degrease ... the most important prep work. Degrease before even sanding. If you sand grease into the paint, you'll be very sorry when you see a bunch of little fish eyes staring back at you. A good body job is all in the prep work. I think most Maaco style places are ok if you do the prep. If not they just mask it off, scuff your paint and shoot it. I don't think they've ever heard of degreasing.
All you have to do when painting is make sure to get an even coat.
My Charger (see the avatar) was done by my friend and I.
Ended up costing me about $300 cdn for time at the shop, (I did have some materials, so didn't need to buy filler or DA pads) and paint. But, I have a lot of good connections and got everything at shop rates. It's a single stage acrylic. The paintjob is 3 years old in that pic, not washed or waxed, just fired up and driven to the location.
We're really lucky the S12 is so boxy. Square edges are a lot easier to fix/prep. Ever seen the hips on a 3rd Gen Charger? icon_cry.gif

Yeah it's got that swoopy rear end like the other '71-'74 B-bodies (roadrunner, satellite). Looking at the '68-'70 and then the '71-'74 Charger and RoadRunner, you'd think they suddenly learned how to stamp steel in a curve sometime during the summer of 1970 and decided to just go nuts.
