Everyone, there's a new chat room on the main page, the link is at the side menu. Go to the main site at http://www.club-s12.org and try it.
(hopefully it won't be blocked by anyone's firewall at work)

WellI hate to bring bad news, but it don;t work at work. It probably uses some other port than http ports, so it don't get through. I imagine my firewall is similar to other people's work firewalls. AIM works for me, only because it can use http ports instead of special ones (Yahooo IM doesn;t work here because of that).
I imagine that during the day when most of our traffic is highest, many of us are at work. I know there have to be some kind of chat thing that uses http ports to send data, if AIM can. Any of you tech gurus have suggestions? In the mean time this one will be good, if only for "after hours" use icon_smile.gif
Edit: After reviewing the ParaChat help site, it seems it can actually use http. It just needs to be configured to do that I guess.
Edit #2: I tried it both ways on their test site and I failed both ways. I'm not sure why.

Ahhh theres some problem with the coding on the main page, works in IE but not in Mozilla, which is usually an indication that something is amiss in the HTML. Just thought I'd let you know. Its something to do with the certificate.

It works for me at work, if I go through IE. I haven't tried any of the other messengers here so I don't know what works and what doesn't. I also use a special version of Mozilla sometimes at work, called Ghostzilla. It runs invisibly most of the time, but when you have an Outlook or other MS Office program running, you can swipe the cursor back and forth over the main window a couple times and bang, the window is replaced with a browser window. As soon as you move the mouse off that window, it dissappears and is replaced by the original window. It's meant for "stealth surfing", you can set the browser window to be monochromatic and not to show images or to show them only when you mouse-over them, so even if one of the bigwigs is around it looks like you're working on some document.
But the chat room won't work through that program.

I've got a pretty serious firewall at work here (won't even let me use FTP) and the chat room seems to work fine.
Parachat does offer a 'super' version of it's chat program with HTTP tunneling, buy you have to pay an arm and a leg for it.
you might have to refresh your browser to make chat appear in the menu
Here is what paraChat told me:
Hi Jason:
Happy new year, and thank you for contacting ParaChat - The Ultimate
Java Chat Solution!
ParaChat is equipped with the ability to utilize HTTP Tunneling to
make connections to our chat service when a TCP/IP connection is blocked
by a firewall or proxy server. However, if a firewall is not configured to
permit HTTP connections to HTTP ports other than 80 and/or 8080 (or is
configured to permit connections using Yahoo IM - port 5050, or AIM),
then an HTTP connection to the chat server is not permitted by your
firewall. Your firewall may be configured to block TCP/IP connections, but must be configured to allow HTTP connections, at least to the HTTP port for the chat server that is hosting your service, to utilize the HTTP Tunneling feature. It appears as though your firewall may be doing
exactly what it has been configured to do - block HTTP connections to
most ports outside of the standard ports, like:
HTTP 80
HTTPS 8080
SMTP 25
IMAP 143
POP3 110
FTP 21
Telnet 23
If a firewall is configured to only permit connections to/from
standard ports, then connections using TCP/IP or HTTP protocol through you firewall will be blocked in most any non-standard instance. Customers
who utilize our ParaChat Server software (http://www.parachat.com/server) on their own hardware have the liberty
to run chat services on ports that they specify, although an issue with
permitting HTTP connections to standard ports on a server is that standard ports are already in use by other processes (see the ports
listed above).
If your system administrator permits HTTP connections to AIM, which is not as secure as a connection between a Java client and server such as ParaChat, then they may be willing to open a port to permit an HTTP connection to our chat services. Please note that HTTP Tunneling is offered with all ParaChat service except for Free ParaChat Rooms.
Thank you for considering ParaChat as your chat solution! Please let
us know if you have other questions, or require further information.
Kind regards,
Mary

My AIM works tho, but only through some kind of HTTP port. We have everything locked down, so I wonder just what port AIM is using...??? What is the standard http port?
